Clarification About "Breathy Period" After Botox vs. Voice Loss

Everyone talks about the breathy period post Botox.....but exactly what does that mean?

The first time I had a botox shot, I experienced the breathiness afterwards, but could still talk. It was such a small amount that only a month later I was back to square one.

But, the next times I had a larger doses, and completely lost my voice for several weeks.....or almost completely the second time. In those two cases, I had more a total voice loss than a breathy period.....followed by voice recovery. Career wise, it was almost a meltdown situation by the way.

So, what does it take to get a botox shot.....and go to the breathy but able to talk period immediately......instead of getting a botox shot, followed by no voice for weeks at a time? I'm assuming the obvious answer......less botox.....but what's the point if a small dose will last only a month?

Any thoughts on this SD dilemma?

Richard, over the years I had 34 injections of BoTox. I reacted to all of them a little differently. Sometimes, I had to be careful swallowing and other times I had a lot of mucous after the injection, etc. At first I had a breathy (breathy being low volume and whispery) voice for a few days. Most of my injections were 2.5 units in each cord. During the latter two years of my injections I became more and more breathy after an injection. The breathines lasted five to six weeks. Most of my injections were about four months apart, therefore, I would be breathy for five or six weeks, have a better voice for a couple of weeks and then start the breakdown again. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster. We tried decreasing the doseage and it did not help very much. My last injection in Oct. 2000 was .625 units in each cord and I was breathy for several weeks.

Hi Richard,

I'm glad you asked the question about what "breathy" actually means as I posed that question to my ENT several months ago. I had told him that most people think "breathy" means the whispery, hoarse, laryngitis kind of voice but he said, "No, no, no...it's when you can only say three or four words on one breath instead of about 15 words which would be normal." In other words, you have to take extra breaths like someone who is short of breath after exercising, etc.

As far as the total voice loss (you didn't say how many units you have had each time), I would guess that somewhere in between those doses might help solve your problem? You might want to discuss dosage with your ENT.

Doris
