Hi everyone! I'm new to this B.B. and have recently been diagnosed with AdSD. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get diagnosed and treated (Botox injection) within four months of seeing a doctor concerning my voice problems, which I know has not been the case for many people. Unfortunately, I'm on the younger side, and realize that so much of my future (career as an educator, starting a family, etc.) will be affected by this disorder. I am thankful for the wealth of information available on the internet (which helped lead to my quick diagnosis), and for all of the people who have shared their experiences on this B.B. Reading through many of the posts has helped me deal with the beginning stages of this disorder. If there are any teachers out there that would like to share advice on how you have dealt with SD as an educator, please do! Any members from the Indianapolis area? Jenni |

Hi Jenni: Welcome to the SDBB. You have come to the right place to learn about SD and have a lot of people supporting you. I wish this had been around in 1987 when I was so desperate for help and info. We have several teachers in our support group (I highly recommend that you find a support group if possible). One of them is still teaching with a lot of difficulty. She schedules her BoTox injections before school starts and during the Holiday break and has managed to continue teaching. Another had the implant operation and her voice was so low in volume, she has never been able to teach again. We also have one who went on disability and is drawing Social Security Disability now. The leader of our support group, Mary Bifaro, had planned to teach but she was dianosed with ABSD the year she graduated and has never been able to do so. As present, there is not a lot of help for ABSD. I hope this helps. E-mail me if I can be of further help. Lib Haywood, Charlotte, NC AD/SD 34 injections of BoTox, SLAD 01/01 |
