I've been receiving bo-tox injections for 5 years after being diagnosed with spasmadic dysphonia. I have significant "pitch breaks" and "breathiness" in my speach. I've typicall received only two injections at a time both at 250. In mid July, the decided to inject all 4 muscles, 2 at 250 and two at 350. It's now 9 weeks since the injections and I still have only a whisper of a voice and significant breathiness. Are you at all familiar with other patients that have experienced this and if so, any recomendations or ideas? My life and my career have come to a grinding hault as a result. I have no ability to communicate with my voice. I'm a very healthy 37 yr old white male. Any ideas, suggestions, etc would be helpful. I'm in treatment at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Sincerely, Greg. |

Hi Greg Sounds as though you have AD/AB since you were injected into all four muscles. And are you sure they gave you 250 units instead of 2.5 in each one? 250 and 350 would be alot for SD patients. Although, I understand that the longer you are in the breathy stage the more lasting the Botox will be, so hang in there. I feel confident that your voice will reappear. So don't give up. If need be consult another doctor. Continue to connect with this BB. You will obtain invaluable information here and know that you are not alone. Doris St. Clair AD/SD Virginia

This may not be of much help, but when I got my first injection of botox in 1990, I received 30 units in one side. I lost my entire voice for well over a month. But, the good news (I guess) is that eventually, the spasms return as the botox looses it's effectiveness. I understand your problem (I had the Berke surgery and now have lost my voice - permanently), but eventually - your voice should return. You just have to cope in the meantime. John |

Hi John, I'm just curious, why did you have surgery done? Was it due to botox in affectiveness? I'm very soory that you lost your voice completely, take care, Chris Moore |

Chris - the effectiveness of botox became more periodic. I had been receiving injections for 10 years. Also, the idea that I would be able to finish my career as a trial attorney with a more normal voice and without having to rely on botox - along with the scheduling problems and pressures - made the decision to have the surgery compelling. At the time of the decision, Dr. Berke's experience had been that the worse that might happen (this is what he told me when I asked) was that spasms would return and I would have to go back on botox. Obviously, as demonstrated by my outcome and Jeff Brode's - there were worse things than predicted. John |

Hi John, I was discussing Dr. Berke's surgery with my husband last night and he asked about the odds of having a normal voice afterwards. I told him that most of the people on this BB had great results, however, that there are a few exceptions, one of which is a trial attorney, (you) (My husband is also an attorney). He asked if you could speak at all and I said I thought that you could at least whisper (as I do most of the time). Is that correct? Or did you lose your voice completely? As I recall, the surgery is about 98% effective. I, as well as most everyone on this BB, have had my ups and downs with Botox, and when I have my downs, that is when I start thinking of surgery.
