I have experimented with Dr Scheer's acupuncture findings with my local acupunturist. Had 12 treatments over six weeks. After 6 treatments my voice increased in volume with some breaks still, but then improved to 85-90% with no breaks. I have purchased a Pointer Plus machine (from Melbourne Australia) and my husband and I have been using it at home for ear stimulation (recommended by Dr Scheer). I can't see the point so my husband has to place the pointer and then I hold it. My acupunturist has marked the point in my ear. My last Botox was 12 April 2002 with 8 weeks of breathy whispery voice, and only ever improved to 55-60% before I began acupuncture. Whether it is the effects of Botox or acupuncture I still don't know, but thought I would post this message.

I just started acupuncture yesterday. I have another appt tomorrow - he recommends 2x a week. He said I'd notice improvement after 4 treatments. We'll see. Tonight I went to a seminar (free) that another acupuncturist/Oriental doctor gave about eliminating stress naturally. He introduced us to different pressure points and also had a stimulator. I think all this is worth exploring. EVen if it does nothing for my SD, it helps w/ general well being. I'll keep you posted.

My last botox was 6/19 and I had no breathiness, same as the previous injection in Jan. So, I thought it didn't work, but my doc says you don't need to be breathy to know the injection worked. I go in and out of exhibiting symptoms - sometimes my voice sounds very normal. I think I have a mild case; mixed AD/AB.

I sent in all my paperwork for the NIH study, but haven't heard anything from them.

Good to know a few other SDers are trying acupuncture! I started doing treatments under Dr. Sheer's method, after showing it to my acupuncture doctor. Just had my 2nd treatment...too early to tell but seemed to have some improvement a few days after the 1st treatment.

Cynthia - if you look up on the BB message posted by Mel Dubovick June 30 2002 you can read about Dr Steven Scheer and others winning National Award for Acupuncture Research to Treat SD. I printed off this message and took it to my acupuncturist.

I completed 8 sessions of acupuncture using Dr. Scheer's model with a Beijing-trained acupuncturist; there was no discernible change in the quality of my voice.

I went to an acupuncturist 4x for 2 wks (2x per week). He said they get better results w/ 2x per week. I have heard that from other acupuncturists too. I did notice a slight difference after those 4 treatments. I certainly felt more calm and centered, which had a positive affect on my voice. I have a mild to moderate case of mixed SD, altho exhibit more AD symptoms. My last botx was June. My voice can sound pretty good at times. Its always worse in the morning, which I know runs counter to most SD patients, whose voices goes downhill as the day progresses. I wonder if I have a some muscle tension dysponia.

Anyway, the acupuncturist did not follow Scheer's technique, altho I gave him the article. When I asked why, he said they were using similar, powerful points (altho none in the ear). After those first 4 visits the acupuncturist wanted me to pre-pay for 11 mos worth of treatments, totally $4000. Well, forget that. The plan was for the first 5 mos to be 2x weekly.

I just started to go to another acupuncturist who is trying to follow Scheer's technique, while still doing what she considers correct. She is suggesting 1x wkly for 3 mos. That course of treatment is more w/i my budget.

She is also recommending a herb and mineral capsule called SPZM. A bottle of 90 tablets is $20, so I plan to purchase a bottle next week. I'm skeptical, but its a small investment. I will post if I get positive results.

Helen
