Just wanted to tell everyone that next week I begin a student teaching gig in an elementary school setting. I am working toward teacher certification and am heading into the classroom with my amplifier turned on and my new found pride in my own disability.

I'm scared to death and have dreaded this part of my career for years. Here goes.....

You go, girl!! Sarah, I'm going to be very interested to hear about the course of your student teaching -- I was an elementary teacher and am now a teacher educator working with career changers. If you like, email me offline re specifics (for instance, is this a career switch for you? from what? what brought you to education?). I applaud you for going forward with your amplifier and your self-confidence. Kids are remarkably open and direct about asking about the mic/amp unit (happens to me all the time), and I tell them I have a problem with me voice and need the mic so they can hear me. That's usually enough, and they accept me as I am. The volume control is certainly handy, I find, in that I can "crank it up" without straining myself. The kids find that intriguing.

Take your vitamins (those kids are great germ-passers), and keep us posted.

all my very best,

Linda Adamson

Sarah,

Congratulations and I'll bet the kids will find your mic/amp interesting and fun. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Remember, being afraid is "self talk", so try hard to concentrate on the wonderful goal you have achieved for yourself. There's lots of us who are professional voice users and we each learn coping mechanisms that work... and always learning more from others on the BB! :-)
