The October 26 Fort Worth Star-Telegram featured this story on how singer Johnny Bush overcame Spasmodic Dysphonia through speech exercises, breathing techniques, self-hyponsis and relaxation. The title of the story is Blessing in Disguise

I suggest you go to this story immediately, because after the newspaper puts it in the archives, they charge a reading fee.

Hi Harriet,

After Botox sometimes I went 6 weeks of whispering, to get a voice that only lasted a few weeks...but as time went on it got better and my "good" voice lasted longer. I was happy to have a good whisper. :) I've had SD for 21 years and spent 9 years with Botox. The injections gave me back my life. I recently opted for the SLAD/R surgery and have been whispering for 4 months 2 days....and now have a soft voice that's getting stronger everyday. I know it gets depressing and frustrating and it is for all of us with SD. But, in my case, I'm just thankful for the things that I don't have. :) I also have Essential Tremor, and Spasmodic Dystonia (I also get Botox injections in the back of my neck for a head tremor) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Severe Asthma and Chronic Bronchitis). I also have/had AD/SD with a severe tremor.

I am a Christian and God has been good to me. I believe that placing myself in God's hands and having a GREAT doctor/surgeon, was the answer for me. I feel God gave my doctor the knowledge and great gift to help me.

Please hang in there......believe me it really does get better.

Jo Ann

The article says that he gives a great deal of credit to his speech pathologist Anat Keidar and his voice coach Gary Catona. He does exercises, breathing techniques, self-hypnosis and intentional efforts to rest his voice, the article says. Sorry, I did not read the article as saying he had a miracle from God. He got the ASLHA award for achievement due to his hard work.

Hi Micki!

I read the article you recommended, and the name Gary Catona is mentioned as a very good Speech Pathologist. Do you happen to know what techniques Gary Catona uses, for SD patients? Have you been in touch with him?

I contacted Gary Catona by email immediately after reading the article. I haven't received a reply yet. He's on the net if you do a search.
