PH Study for Acid Reflux

Hello everyone,

Mr. primary Dr. has just suggested I obtain a 24 hour PH Study for my acid reflux. I believe a thin tube is placed through the nose and into the lower esophagus to measure the PH level.

I have been on 3 different medications for acid reflux - protonix, prevacid, and Nexium. The latest picture that my ENT took of my throat still shows a great deal of inflammation and red tissue all around my throat area. The picture also indicated a small "Granuloma" on the vocal chords. After all this medication, there's been very little improvement. So now I am having a PH Study done that will measure the acid level in the esophagus to determine if I do in fact have acid reflux.

I was wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar PH Study done and what the outcome was in relation to your acid reflux. I previously had an upper GI where they put me to sleep and put a tube down my esophagus and probed around. That test came back negative. I am just a little frustrated about having to go through one more test that seems like a long shot of it amounting to anything helpful.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Paul in Northern VA

Hi Paul, I have had the 24 hr probe. I had a barium swallow to start this was negative for reflux. I still kept being told I must have reflux and I must have been having a good day when I had the "swallow" and that the reflux was causing my voice problem. No symptoms though and spasms of the vocal cords had been seen at this point.
24 hr probe was unremarkable the only time the recording showed any problem was when I was speaking after eating as the spasm is so strong when I speak it causes food to back up my throat.
Test is not so bad just drink some water if you feel uncomfortable. I had to pull the tube out myself and send everything back registered post..lots of tube...ugh.
I am about to be Botoxed after 64 months and a third opinion.........
Reflux does affect the cords so best to rule that out and get treatment first if you need it.
Mail me at home if you want any more info.

Krissie,

Thanks for the quick reply. I would like some more specific info on that PH test. I'm trying to figure out if I really need this test. I guess it wouldn't hurt. I tried to email you back by clicking on your name, but it didn't work. I'll try again. Thank you very much.

Hi Paul,

I have GERD (Acid Reflux) but never had the PH test. A couple of years ago I had a "scope" down my esophagus and into my stomach. The doc prescribed Prilosec and Ranitidine. The medications worked but were too strong to keep taking. Now I'm taking Pepcid AC, 40mg morning and evening. Seems to help a lot. You can get 10mg doses of Pepcid AC over the counter...you might want to try it. Let us know how your test goes.
