Prior to my diagnois after a car wreck, I had acupuncture treatments twice a week for about four years. It did not help the vocal quality, but did help some of the spasms and definitely reduced pain from the whiplash/5 & 6 cervical degeneration which I have. Unfortunately, as others have written, I could not afford to keep paying for acupuncture "out of pocket", as my insurance plan does not include acupuncture. My neurologist referred me to one of Denver's "Bronco Sports Medicine" physical therapy centers about a year ago. Interestingly, the physical therapy treatment was simply the use of Dr. Bruce Hocking's ETPS handheld pointer/battery operated, done at points up and down my spine and followed with heat wraps. After a few weeks, the physical therapists trained my husband to find the "points" and stimulate them with the handheld "TENS PRO 900" at home. This is (in the States) only available by prescription by a physician. It gives me wonderful pain relief without medication in the back of neck, shoulders, back. My neurologist and my neuro-laryngologist aren't sure how this affects S.D., since they are blocking nerves and trying to settle things down in the muscles. Has anyone used this on the front of your neck as directed in the pain management manual? It seems to give internal relief to those deep spasms (ie., PCA muscle), but I'm a little confused about the stimulation vs.Botox thing. It is set to a "negative" charge which is supposed to relax the muscles (I think?). Right now, I'm having good success from Botox injections with a slightly hoarse voice, but one that works again after six years!!! Thus, haven't needed to use ETPS much, except for old whiplash stuff. I'd love to know if anyone out there has also been prescribed with this and has had any success in helping SD symptoms.
