New to the BB and really finding it helpful! I would like to know if anyone has heard of or has been treated by "The Voice Doctor" Dr. Morton Cooper in California? I've been on his website and have been reading about his treatment'direct voice rehabilitation'.

Beth - If you use the "search" feature on this bbs, you'll find several comments/discussion regarding Dr. Cooper. Executive Summary: It is expensive; it works for some people; it is hard to keep up the technique/practice after the personal sessions. John

Beth,

I've read a lot about Dr. Cooper and reviews seem mixed. However, my experience is that speech therapy can work. It worked for me. I have AB quite severely; I was largely unable to communicate verbally. It was hard work and took time, but I learned alternative phonation via speech therapy (some folks call this reprogramming the speech mechanism, I usually call it my "engineered voice") that enabled me to return to work and social life with a highly functional voice. Producing the voice takes effort, and it isn't perfect and I often use amplification, but I'm very happy with my result. While I stopped therapy two years ago, my voice has not reverted. In fact, my abilities have continued to improve over time.

Regards,

Linda

Beth,

I have posted here recently about Dr. Cooper in answer to a speech therapists inquires. I spoke with Dr. Cooper myself and then some of his patients. You can read his book "Voice Suicide". I gave my copy to my speech therapist after reading it myself. It was actually given to me by my ENT as an alternative to Botox injections. He is very expensive and it takes alot of time and dedication. Alot of his technics were presented in my Speech Therapy sessions. Very few Insurance companies will cover his treatment. Good Luck...

Beth,

I have Dr. Cooper's book and a couple of tapes. I found some of his technics to be very useful. I have also had speech therapy at a local clinic, and like Linda I found it to be very helpful. It takes a lot of practice. Sometimes when I'm stress, it's hard to remember to apply what I've learned. I've been using an idea from one of Linda's early posting about talking to a plant or something while on the phone and have found it very useful.

Cindy
