I have been getting Botox shots for AD/SD for ten years now. Mostly from Dr. Brin but more recently from Dr. Blitzer. The shots have always been Bilateral and very effective lasting six months and giving me a completely normal voice for about four months. The only problem was a loss of voice for three to four weeks after the shot. So the last time Dr. Blitzer lowered the dose from .3 to .25 to see if that would help. The result was the same four weeks of recovery but the spasms are still there! Guess I have proven to myself that dosage has little relationship to recovery time but could have a big effect on the benefit you get. I have only had about 20 shots total so hopefully this is not a scar tissue issue. Do I go back after only two months and try the old dose of .3? Botox has been so consistent for me for so long that I guess I started taking it for granted. This is very disturbing new ground for me. |

Jon, sorry to hear that you've experienced this problem after having had a good run in the past. When my doctors, several years ago, kept lowering the dose of bilateral injections to help with the breathiness or 'loss of voice' you describe, the result was that the benefit didn't last as long. At one point they repeated shots (dose was about 0.3 units) after only 6 weeks - I wouldn't recommend that generally as too frequent injections might raise the risk of developing immunity to the Botox. My advice, initially, would be to go back to what has worked in the past for you - but if it doesn't settle down to a pattern you are happy with soon, I would seriously consider asking about unilateral injections. For some of us (not all) it resolves the loss of voice problem straight after Botox, and a relatively high dose (10 units in my case) ensures the benefit is still 4-6 months. Good luck!
