To those of you who responded to my previous post about neurontin--THANKS!!! Now I want to ask you about how long does it take for the drug to take effect? I remember previous posts stating that it took awhile. Thanks in advance for your responses...

Hi Renee,

The Neurontin took a couple of weeks to have an effect on my voice, but the effect go better. It has a short half-life so you have to take it at regular intervals, and I found if I missed one I could tell cause my throat got tighter, not because I remembered :)

Hope it helps you too - it never made my vouce "perfect" but it really helped the effort involved.

Cheer and Merry Christmas,

Narelle

Renee,

Sorry to be "wishy-washy" but seems it is one of those things (similar to Botox/Myobloc) wherein, everybody (and "every body") is different.

You're lucky that your doc is willing to work with you. Great to have such a receptive doc.

As mentioned, I took 900 mgs for two months. My doc told me it would take one month to take effect. The effect (side-effect) in the first week was drowsiness. After that, I saw zero effect in two months, except that I had some severe breathing spasm episodes in the second month. I took Neurontin for relief from the bad breathing spasms which are tied into not being able to vocalize.

At this point, as I'm a surgically treated case and that surgery has failed, I can't compare myself to a Botox/Myobloc case, like you, in taking Neurontin. Whatever info I give you would not completely apply.

I was hoping to get some relief from the spasms with Neurontin though, and got none. Wish I could give you better advice and news. Hope it works for you, as well as for some. Keep us posted.

Happy New Year!

--Lynne (AD/SD; Northern California)
