Hypnosis?

Has anyone ever wondered about Hypnosis being an alternative treatment to the Botox? When I first realized I had some kind of disorder with my voice, and I didn't know that it had a name, I very often steered toward hypnosis as a treatment option for me. I would like to get some feed back from you.

Thanks,

Kassy...AD/SD

My understanding of hypnosis is that it has some validity in treating a learned behaviour - eg to stop smoking. In contrast, spasmodic dysphonia is a physical (neurological) movement disorder - the dystonic spasms are the result of corrupt signalling from the brain when attempting normal conversation. They cannot be willed away consciously, or unconsciously, in the same way that other neurological disorders (MS, Parkinsons) cannot either. SD isn't a bad habit that can be unlearned.

In the early days of dealing with my voice disorder, which I subsequently learned was SD, I did visit a hypnotist. This person swung pieces of brightly coloured glass in front of my eyes and from that divined that my SD was the result of emotional coldness from my father in my formative years. I only went to this hypnotist once.

Seeing you have asked for feedback, and advice, mine is not to waste your money on this, but we all have our own journeys to take in dealing with our SD. If you do decide to try it, set measurable goals and limits on the treatment, so that you have decided in advance when to stop and when to realise it isn't working.

Best wishes

David Barton (AD/SD, Auckland, NZ)

I tried hypnosis for my AD/SD and experienced perfectly normal speech for several hours that evening following the session. The next morning my voice was still much improved, but by noon, I was back to my spastic voice. I went to the same hypnotherapist for a second session, but nothing happened (other than writing another check.) I tried a second therapist for two sessions, and no improvement. Her approach was that it would "build" and would take several sessions. I decided I had thrown enough money at it and opted to discontinue. I am still working on self-hypnosis, (it's free-and there are lots of books about it) but haven't broken the code on it yet. Botox has still been my best solution-though my shots have only lasted 4-6 weeks.

I totally agree with David and used hypnosis as well. In fact, I even became a hypnotherapist so I could really learn the mechanics and techniques. It was temporary at best and David’s' description was perfect. SD is not a bad habit rather a symptom and end result of something gone wrong in the system. My belief is it won't go back to where it came from (laughing) until we do something different. This reminds me of the insanity definition ...where we expect different results when doing the same thing over and over again. Save your hard earned money and let the hypnotherapist help someone stop smoking!
