I am hoping by joining this message board I can get some information. I have, for the past six years, lost my voice spontaneously in which sometimes I have no voice, sometimes I have a raspy voice and sometimes I have a really high pitched voice. Occurences last anywhere from one to two weeks, sometimes longer. These occur at random where most of the time I have a normal voice. At first, the change would happen every six months or so. Recently, in the past three years, it has become more regular happening six or seven times in year. I have been sent to a ENT whom had reffered me to a speech pathologist. Both of which told me that it was just from yelling or possibly maybe allergies. Recently, a collegue of mine introduced me to spasmodic dysphonia. Upon reading symptoms on different websites, I found myself saying "this is me!". My problem is, I feel now that I do not know what to do. I have already seen the specialists to which I was told that it was in my head. Please help!! The loss of voice has affected my personal and professional life. When my episodes occur I cannot speak to people during my job and I do not feel like going to social engagements for I feel stupid that no one can hear me. I would appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice. I live in the Indianapolis area so if anyone lives around the area and knows where I can find help please let me know. Thanks.

Generally SD is a chronic voice disorder which affects most verbal interactions rather than occurring in episodes as you describe. The main typical symptoms are breaks in certain word/vowel combinations and effort in speaking - rather than variation in pitch.

If you suspect you do have SD then there are world-leading treatment centers in both Chicago and Detroit. Take a look at the Healthcare Referral link at the NSDA's website - this shows a list of medical professionals who offer SD treatment. The link is www.dysphonia.org

Good luck
