I have been taking it for 3 or 4 years. I take one 0.5mg tablet before going to bed. I take one-half of a 0.5 mg tablet in the morning. It does have a calming effect. Most importantly, it helps me to sleep well at night. If I don't get a good night's rest (8 hours, at least), my voice is worse the next day. I've noticed no unpleasant side effects.

Hi Amy, The other day I had to go to my Ophthalmologist for an eye problem and since he knows about my SD told me about a drug that may help called Topamax. He suggested that I ask my GP or ENT to give me a prescription for it. He said that it may very well help my SD symptoms. However, I have not tried Clonazepam. Hope it works for you. Best of luck to you. Doris St. Clair AD/SD VA

I successfully utilized Clonazepam (Klonopin) combined with Neurontin as a Botox substitute for about 1.5 years. During this period there was no side effects to the Clonazepam though the Neurontin can make some people sleepy. Unfortunately the benefits of the drug mixture went away and I had to go back to Botox shots. The first few Botox shots did not work at all as I still had the medications in my system. I don't know if it was the Clonazepam or Neurontin that inteferred with the Botox but based on the comment of others, I assume it was the Neurontin. I think the "moral of this story" is mixing Botox and medications can be very tricky.

Thank you to everyone who has replied. I have filled my perscription but I have not started taking clonazepam yet. I need to do some research on the side effects; specifically related to pregnancy. I am in a tricky time in my life. I want to treat my sd but at the same time I am in the stage of life where I am having children. Medicines and babies don't mix. Do any of you know if it is safe to take clonazepam during pregnancy and while nursing. Amy sd/ad

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine, which is basically a sedative/hypnotic medication. One has to becareful on benzos because they can be habit forming. Not only that, they decrease stage 3 and 4 sleep, meaning, even though it may help you "sleep", you're losing the stages of sleep that give you rest. Also, those that are dependent on benzos, withdrawal is very dangerous. It has to be tapered, otherwise there is the risk of withdrawal seizures, much akin to alcohol withdrawal. And I believe the receptors that benzos and alcohol target are similar (gaba).

Hi there,
I have been in your situation and was told emphatically not to take it during pregnancy - it crosses the placenta and may harm the baby - especially regular use - the baby can become "addicted" to the drug. However, after pregnancy and from then on I have taken 0.5 morning and night and it helps my throat relax really well - does more to stop MTD (muscle tension dysphonia) than the SD which is not bothering me after the thyroplasty - the cords can't touch. So i'd definitely wait till after pregnancy, or pregnancies, and then perhaps give it a shot - but talk to your doctor above all. Cheers Narelle

Narelle,
Thank you for your advice about pregnancy. I felt that was the best option to wait until my pregnancy years are over. At this point I am looking for other treatments that are not drug related to help me with my sd. Thanks for your information! Amy
