SD and pet meds

This morning I applied flea killer drops to two of my dogs and I had an almost immediate reaction. My voice, what little I have, went south and I was unable to refill a prescription over the phone, a daunting task at most times but today was a nightmare. Then the headache set in and I felt shaky so I looked up the product on the net and was horrified to find out the side effects, which include neurological damage, parkinsonism, breathing disorders, liver and kidney damage and on and on. Some were worse than others but all were bad. These are the single application tubes you apply to your pet once a month. I bought them to try because I don't like using the sprays and this summer has been worse than usual for fleas.
I just wondered how many people with SD and other movement disorders have pets that they treat or have treated in the past with these type of flea and tick repellants.
I've always suspected that pesticide use caused my SD which started when I operated a plant shop and sprayed regularly. After this immediate reaction my suspicions are confirmed.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this they would care to share?
Sammy AD/SD 25 yrs.

So sorry to hear this! How are you now? I have my own animals and work with rescued animals and I'm not aware of this having an affect on me. I wonder if anything is happening from the flea meds to me that I'm not necessarily aware of!

I hope you're feeling better! Anyone else have this kind of reaction?

I'm feeling better. Thanks for your concern.
Basically, I wanted to call attention to a possible problem for immune compromised SD'ers with pets. My dogs were none too happy with the treatment and were lethargic and off their food for the day but seem alright now.
Now their fleas jump off of them and on to me!!!!
I would suggest to anyone having to apply pesticides for any reason to wear a surgical type mask and latex gloves whenever possible and do it outdoors.
Have a great weekend!
Sammy

Oh no Sammy! You sure don't want fleas on you! I'm finding that the flea applications aren't working like they're supposed to, but my animals have never had a bad reaction to them. Did you know that although they sell cats and dogs flea meds separately, they are exactly the same? I've always bought them separately for my animals and someone told me this so I read the label. They have the same exact ingredients! I'm referring to Advantage. I don't know for sure about others, but that's easy enough to check out.

Like I said, I've never noticed this having an effect on my voice, but it may and I just don't know it. Your suggestion to wear gloves and maybe even a mask, is a good one!

Glad to hear you and your animals are feeling better!

I apply this flea medication to my pets on a monthly basis. I have AB/AD mixed SD but certainly do not consider myself immune compromised. It is a neurological disorder and has not as yet affected my immune system. A diagnosis for SD is quite separate from a diagnosis for an immune disorder. I don't think it is a good idea to correlate the two systems.

The flea medications are clearly quite toxic, especially to fleas. I haven't noticed any affect on my voice! But, I do think that you make a good suggestion when you mention face masks and rubber or latex gloves.
