Hello everyone,
I used to sing classical music for about 8 or 9 years until I was diagnosed with voice dysphonia. I was hoping to find some help anywhere on the Internet regarding this. I absolutely love to sing. And I want to sing again, like I used to. I have tried massage, relaxation therapy, etc to reduce the voice dysphonia. The doctor that I saw about that said that I also have acid reflux.

Thank you!
Jennifer

Hi:
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. What I find interesting is that you were also diagnosed with acid reflux. I have heard this many times, that people who are diagnosed with SD also are said to have acid reflux. The same is true for me. I was immediately put on protonix to treat acid reflux. I wonder why there is such a common association between these 2 illnesses. Anyway, good luck with your voice. Do you have AB or AD?

Before I was diagnosed with SD, I was MIS-diagnosed with acid reflux. The doctor I was seeing didn't know what my problem was, so he suggested it was acid reflux. It turns out that wasn't the case at all. Maybe people with acid reflux have a problem with hiccupping or burping, which may cause a hesitation in the voice...maybe that's why doctors misdiagnose it. I wonder how many SD people actually have acid reflux....

Hi,
Throughout the last 5 months I've had a number of unexplained physical symptons thinking they were related to Dystonia.Difficulty breathing misdiagnosed as asthma, trouble swallowing, tested for dysphagia.Had a barrium swallow done ordered by a Lung doctor.2 weeks ago I had another swallowing test done by a speech therapist that should've been a doctor in my opinion. She explained the whole swallowing process and how the dystonic contractions of the sphinchter muscle at the top of the esophagus can affect swallowing. She also explained that many people with S.D can also have dystonic contractions of the lower sphinchter muscle of the esophagus hence causing acid reflux.During my barium swallow in 4-04 I was able to watch the X ray process.Saw the food going down the esophagus but after every swallow there was air pockets that were visible immediately after swallow. The therapist explained this as dystonic contractions. The therapist also explained that many times there is excess mucous on the vocal cords hence feeling the need to clear the throat.I have read a report regarding same and when i find link I'll post it.I feel as if I constantly have to clear my throat,I frequently have gagging fits whereas nothing but mucousy substance iscoughed up.
I can;t verify the accuracy of the info provided to me by the therapist but she is the only one that has described affects of dystonic contractions in any detail. She also showed me how to trigger more yawns, because if people do not catch me in a yawn I can't be understood.Sorry this post is so long.Take care pattio from New Jersey
