Vagus Nerve and SD

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone has explored a connection to the Vagus Nerve and SD. From what I've read, this nerve is linked to the larynx, windpipe, stomach, heart and digestive system. And if the Vagus is pinched or damaged, it can cause problems in any of these areas. Hmmm.... If that's the case, what can you do to heal or strengthen this nerve? Exercise, diet, or?

Never heard of the vagus nerve until I read your question and did some internet searching. You certainly are correct that the vagus nerve could affect MANY of the body mechanisms that involve speech. The only treatment for vague nerve that I could find involve stimulation via surgically implanting a device into the chest.

I know my response is not a direct answer but your question is very compelling and I wish someone in the SD medical research community could investigate it. I'll pass the word around some SD Support Groups - you never know when it reaches the right person.

Found this link that describes the results of the superior laryngeal nerve being infected with a virus. The symptoms sound like SD.
They include:

Vocal fatigue
Difficulty projecting voice
Breathiness
Voice breaks or missing notes
Tightness in throat
Loss of range, usually upper, but can include middle or lower range
Increased warm-up time
Hoarseness
Increased effort with voice production (usually because of compensation or working too hard muscularly)

I checked out the site...interesting. Some of the physical aspects of the vocal cords, though, don't seem to match what the typical AB SD cords look like, at least in my case. The symptoms sure sound the same.

It sounds logical that a nerve could get infected, cut off or diminish impulses to the speech muscles, and then have the speech muscles be weak even if the nerve recovers.
