SSDI Denied because I have verbal communication skills?

As if I wasn't depressed enough because my voice has left me completely today I got my letter from Social Security that my claim had been denied. I expected they would since they reject 60% of initial claims. Last week was a bad week for me as Maytag, where I worked since 1970 closed their doors and my friends had their last sad day last Thursday. Allergy season has begun and my voice just kept getting worse, until now I have no sound at all, not even a whisper. The rejection letter from Social Security says my "condition does cause some restrictions in your ability to function. However, you still have the ability to do verbal communication skills limited work. I am supposed to answer 2 phone lines, wait on customers, do the bookwork, and communicated with our CPA and to call on customers for accounts receivable collections. The books are the only thing I can actually do, and I often have severe headaches when the muscle tension in my neck gets severe. I guess now I start the appeal process and hopefully find a doctor who is willing to help me on my claim. It should be obvious my voice is gone, since I use a dry erase board to talk to my doctors. They come in a close as they can to hear me when I could whisper, but I have lost even my whisper now.

Well, you know with all of the Washington DC blitz we are getting I wonder if anyone ever thought about how much money would be saved if they made an effort to do it right the first time...Don't get upset...start the appeals process....

I have a brother with major Mental Illness , rescued from the street...couldn't function even had to be in a group home . They turned him down took an attorney plus his Shrink and Social Worker but he got mega bucks back pay... My sister in law has had a total of three back surgeries in just over a year, the last being a disc fusion with 6 pins..I have been concerned on how much pain killers she has been on...but you guessed it...she was supposed to be working...anyway hers is with an attorney awaiting an appeal...

Just keep you chin up....Have someone contact some of the non-profits in your area and find the names of good attorneys that specialize in filing claims.... I am sure the Bulletin Board or NSDA can help with names of good Dr's in your area.

When I used to volunteer their was a lot of gossip about quota's being behind the denials...I don't know if I still have a copy of the letter SSA sent denying it. But I know that I heard an attorney talk that used to work for SSA and they said that they used the argument that someone with mental illness could work as a toll booth attendent...Basically the attorney and the Dr had to prove that they could not function in such a position.

Just make sure everything you can't do is documented for the hearing.

Best of Luck....My background is in Accounting type work...lost a job after 15 years, have been functioning as a long term temp worker doing mainly Data Entry...but worry about what comes next.

Charlyn

I started the appeal on line tonight. I thought it would take a few minutes to print the form, etc. It went on and on. I started at 5:00 and just finished at 9:30 and I still have other forms I have to fill out that I printed. I had to go on endlessly repeating all the information they already have. Oh yes, I have to go get 15 more medical release forms even though I signed 20 already for the same doctors. I see why social security is going broke with all the paper, clerks, and lawyers they use to tell people what they can do, like work in a toll booth. I can't talk, stand or walk because of severe breaks in both feet, and now I have arhritis in my hand, wrist, and feet. Not sure what they mean by finding other work I can do. Sitting, standing, driving are all painfull for me.
