Although Ive recently started seeing an excellent Otolaryngologist I'm in the position of not yet having started Botox shots. As a consequence, I'm looking for viable alternatives. The subject of hypnosis came up. Is there anyone out there that has had any experience at all attempting to treat or treating SD with some form of intense hypnosis? If so I would like to hear about it.

Norton, welcome to the NSDA Bulletin Board.

I consulted a hypnotist about 20 years ago when my SD was undiagnosed - at this time I was under the mistaken belief that my voice symptoms ought to be under my control somehow. There was no benefit whatsoever.

Although several of us on the BB have tried a variety of 'alternative' treatments for SD, there is no history or pattern of any one method permanently helping a significant number of genuine SD patients.

SD is the voice that results from laryngeal dystonia - a neurological movement disorder. Given the neurological etiology of SD, I would suggest that hypnosis is as likely to be successful as it would be for other neurological disorders - eg Parkinsons, MS, etc - in other words, not at all.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on if you decide to try it.

David Barton (AD/SD, Auckland, New Zealand)

Norton-

I have tried hypnosis and virtually every available conventional and alternative treatment for my AD/SD diagnosed 12 years ago. Very litle made a difference but a few things have. For a full accounting of my efforts go to www.

I, too tried hypnosis during my visits to Philadelphia and Dr. Sattaloff. It was very relaxing and, immediately after the sessions - for an hour or so, I found my voice was also relaxed. But the benefits passed quickly. John

I have tried hypnosis pre BOTOX. My practitioner even asked me to speak when in a trance guess what, no improvement. Strange this as pre BOTOX my voice would improve if I woke up in the middle of the night and this state is what we tried to reproduce. I did find however that the relaxation from the treatment helped me through a stressfull time until I recived my first Shot.
