Magnets

I had Dr. Burkes SD surgery September 13th. I am considering trying magnet therapy to help promote healing of the nerves that were cut during surgery. I had originally contacted a therapist to help me recover from a back injury using magnet therapy. She used magnets and Far-Infared technologies made by Nikken with very positive results.

I told her about the SD surgery and she suggested that I try wearing a Nikken wrap using the same two technologies. The wrap is a very comfortable looking cloth wrap that I could wear while sleeping or all the time if I wanted. If anyone has any experience with these products I would really like to hear from you before I plop down my $95.00 for the wrap.

Thank you,
Steve Simpson

Our Support Group recently participated in a research program performed by students at UNCG. We wore a sweat band filled with magnets around our neck for eight hours a day for thirty days. The results did not show that much change in our voices. Some people felt it was easier to talk with the magnets. The consensus was if it makes you feel better, wear them. A number of people in our group have worn magnets on their own, such as bracelts and necklaces, including myself. Some people say it offers relief but I did not feel my voice changed enough to continue wearing them. Our support group started the trial with magnets after we heard that a lady in Ariz. started wearing one and her SD cleared up. She had been wearing it for four years and had not had SD during that time.

We also experimented with acupunture. I tried that also. It did help my voice but I would have had to go every week to keep it constant. Insurance does not pay for it. We have two people in our group who go very week or two. One has been able to return to work and make speeches. She receives low BoTox injection every six to ten months. The other one has not had to have BoTox for over two years. Prior to the acupunture she was going every four months for injections.

Steve,

I can't speak for the Nikken wrap but I did wear a Nikken magnetic necklace for about 18 months, hoping it would ease some of the "gravelly" and "out-of-breath" vocal symptoms I have periodically. I had RLN surgery from Dr. Dedo almost 5 years years ago and my severe SD spasms/tremors stopped with the surgery but I got some other "interesting vocal reactions" as a result of my SD surgery.

The necklace was $150. I noticed no reaction of any kind (either better-or-worse) during the time I wore it next to my incision. I have since stopped wearing it because it interferes with the other jewelry I wear around my neck. I prefer "silver" instead of the brassy-look of that Nikken necklace.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind regarding magnets. I do believe in magnet-therapy in general, by the way, so keep that in mind while reading these "two things." I did quite a bit of research prior to putting that necklace on in the first place.

First thing: Magnets only "work" when the disturbance that you have in your system responds to them. In other words, whatever you are trying to address needs to be susceptible to electro-magnetic energy. Circulation imbalance and stuff like that. The incision from Berke-surgery seems like a good candidate but it all depends on your own body. There's not much of a guarantee with magnets. Works for some and not others. (BTW, they've had great success in using them with race horses but I don't know which brand or configuration they use to wrap those thoroughbred legs).

Second thing: Nikken is a multi-level-marketing company and the stuff is not cheap. I was lucky because my mother's podiatrist was a Nikken distributor and he loaned her alot of magnet-stuff (mattress-pad, etc.)for a 30-day trial before she had to purchase it AND she bought me the necklace. Had I had to purchase it myself, I would be doing the same kind of research you are doing. I was truly hoping my necklace would help me a little but it didn't at all. With some, the magnet products are successful. It would be nice if your physical therapist could loan you the wrap for 30-days to see if you respond to it prior to purchase.

Good luck on your research and potential purchase decision.

Studies have shown that wearing a magnet helps with pain relief. Many people who participate in sports wear them. I started wearing a magnet for my sd in August 98 after one was given to me. My voice improved after wearing the magnet. However, I can not prove that the magnet was the reason for the improvement. Let me point out that no two people with sd are alike. One type of therapy may help one person and not help the other. If you would like to experiment with wearing a magnet go to a store like WalMart or Kmart and buy one for less than $20.00 or ask the therapist to lend you one for a "test drive."
