Just make a sound as you inhale.
You can make sounds at different pitches too.

Hi:
Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would you want to practice phonating on inhalation? This seems to me like what is often an undesirable aspect associated with people who have SD, namely, reverse breathing, where people do tend to speak while taking in air. Excuse me if I'm on the wrong track here and missing the point!

The original question (see "false vocal cords") was about how to get the false vocal cords to stop taking over from the true vocal cords. Phonating on inspiration is a technique to get the true vocal cords vibrating and get them in the habit of closing properly. Dr. Daniel Boone in his textbook on voice therapy, says it is physically impossible for the vocal cords to over-close while phonating on inspiration. This is not a technique to use for talking, but for practice to bring the vocal cords in alignment.
