My Gastriologist suggested I try it for my case. Mine is more of a Muscle Tension Disorder. He said he had a patient with Spasmodic Dysphonia, but was treating her for another condition and noticed a considerable difference in her voice even after long term. It is used primarily as a anti-depressant/anxiety medication. He wants me to try it for awhile. It is an old medication and supposedly is non addicting.

I've never heard of Doxepin being used to treat Spasmodic Dysphonia. I did, however, look up this medication and see that in some individuals it can cause dystonic reactions. Personally, I'd have to be next to death before I'd take a medication to treat SD (i.e., a laryngeal dystonia) that could cause a dystonic reaction. Several antidepressants (among many other medications) fall into this class. This is just my personal opinion. I realize some people need these medications for reasons completely unrelated to SD and for them, perhaps, the benefits outweigh the risks. Laurie

I plan to give it a try, starting this weekend, since he said the first day or so may cause some drowsiness. It is an old drug and he said he had some success with it with another patient. He was treating her for something unrelated when he noticed the improvement in her voice. The drug is primarily used for depression/anxiety. Is non addicting so I thought I would give it a try. my case is more of a Muscle Tension Disorder, I've been told.

What?! Antidepressants can cause dystonias?! Again, what?! I've taken prozac for years and it is an absolute necessity. It has nothing to do with my SD. I'm clinically depressed and don't have much of a choice if I want to live a normal life. Can you give me some more information on this? Thank you.

Hi Larry, Wish I would have seen this message before you made a choice to take the Doxepin. My past doc thought it would help if I took an antidepressant also. I took Lexapro for 6 months. It didn't help my voice, but made me feel good and not consider it as much. Matter of fact I felt gooooooood on that Lexapro!! But not helpful for my voice SD. I also took meds for gastric reflux. They didn't help either. The only thing that has worked for me is Botox. Good Luck Hollyberry

Hi Holly,
I have stayed away from the Botox all these years now, so I don't think I want to start now. I have GERD too, and have taken
Prilosec for 8 years. My case is probably on the milder side, so I thought I have nothing to lose by trying it?Larry
