weird?

Just looking for more advice please everyone. My voice is still very strange - strained, choppy, and I keep getting out of breath. The thing is I've discovered that I can sing fine and also if I talk in a stupid cartoon character voice it's much louder and clearer, especially if talking between my teeth if that makes sense. Is this normal or simply further evidence that I'm weird?

I thought the same thing 25 years ago when I found my voice was strong on stage, but not off stage. I thought it was just proof that I was as crazy as the doctors were telling me I was. The doctor who finally diagnosed my disorder said that people have all kinds of different things that either make it easier or harder to talk. What works for one doesn't always work for another. I also found that speaking with an accent helps. If I am in a play that calls for a southeren or British accent my voice is even stronger. I have talked to other SDs who do theater and they have found the accent thing to be true for them too. Something about the interruption of the neurological loop.
Everyone is a little weird about something. Even people who can talk just fine!!
Ida

No, you are not "weird". I have had SD for the past 40 years, for most of those years i was without a clue as to what caused my problem, as SD was unknown by the medical profession. I agree that if you speak at a different pitch, the voice seems to improve. I have noticed that my SD has changed through the years. At the beginning my speech was "strangled" and almost painful, now it is very quiet and breathless. I think it changed from the ADDuctor form, to the ABDuctor form. It seems to have its own agenda, there are good times, and bad times with little reason, or understanding on my part. We are all observing and judges ourselves in the absence of a clear understanding of the disease. Recently i observed that when i am running on the tredmill at the gym in the morning, i am hyper-ventilating, and i find that my speech is stronger, when speaking to others. We all need to try not to be to hard on ourselves, as we did not cause this malady, and have limited control over it.

Thankyou so much to both of you! Your comments made me feel much more positive. The problem is, I still have no appointment with a specialist and I'm stuck at home thinking about things and of course, convincing myself of all sorts! Could anyone possibly spend some time describing the symptons/quirks/things that help etc for me - hopefully to continue to put my mind at ease? For example: I don't understand how I can sing but not talk. Much appreciated. Thanks again.

Dear Pink, I can also sing but not talk it has something to do with the brain and the different areas for each function. Hope you get a good doc! Best regards Hollyberry

I don't really have advice...I'm also looking for answers! I have also found that it can be hard to breath while trying to talk. And yes I can sing and laugh. My speech therapist told me that when we speak complex muscles are at work, etc., and actually work harder than when we sing. I joked to her that maybe I should just start to pretend I'm Mary Poppins, and sing while I talk! Of course this would make me stranger than I already am! I've also found that when I do strenuous exercise my breaking/talking thing gets a little better. Take care!

Thanks to both of you - this is so weird, it is hard to make sense of sometimes; particularly when well meaning people look completely amazed when I try to explain what's happening with my voice! How do all cope with questions/concern/advice? How do you get the through the day without feeling exhausted? Have you found any tricks/tips that make talking a bit easier?
