Hi there,
This has happened to me also.. I am not saying it is being caused from SD.. But I found what helped was running a cool mist vaporizor....(dont know if I spelled that right)...
I think it has to do with what kind of heat you have.. I have forest air.. (gas heat) which can be dry.. and then there is Elecric heat,, which is extremely dry..!! Running the vaporizor OR a humidifier will help alot! ~Angie~

Snowie,
Hi, I have had adductor dystonia for 8 years and when it first started, I had more trouble breathing than I did talking. I would stop breathing in my sleep from my larynx spasming closed and I would wake up with this obnoxious noise that was 1/2 a sneeze and 1/2 a cough. It was so loud it would wake me and my husband up. I don't do that anymore. I take clonazepam and get botox shots every 3 months. I hope you find some relief, I remember how scary that time was for me. My husband use to wake me up because I would stop breathing in my sleep. It was so hard for him we divorced 7 years ago.
Because breathing is so much more necessary I wouldn't care if I couldn't talk, I just want to be able to breathe.

I have done this since a very young age. In 95 they said it was apnea, but I didn't stop breathing enough to wear a CPAP machine. In 2000 they put me on the machine for the number of incidences has increased. However, I am not obese as most sleep apnea patients. I actually stop breathing on occassion when I am awake. Recent trip to the ER did not show an enlarged heart which is common with sleep apnea and made the doctor question my diagnosis. Sleep Apnea KILLS. Please make certain that it is not Sleep Apnea that is causing your choking spells. Reggie White, pro football player just recently died due to sleep apnea. Please see your neurologist about this. Thanks very much for your replies.
Jeanee - thats funny you should mention about sleep apnea, someone recently emailed me about one of my old posts on another subject 'fatigue' ... and said the same thing. I've only heard about it in passing on this board before, so checked out some further informatin on it last night. Over the last couple of months I've also been diagnosed with high blood pressure, (which is proving dificult to control at mo with meds) and have asthma, as well as Ab SD, which causes breathing problems. So I was thinking perhaps I should go back to my doctor about this, but I felt that she would think 'ohh gawd not something else! ...'. So was planning to put it off until my next appointment with my pulmonolgist. But maybe your right, I have another appointment with my doctor next week, so I will mention it then and see what she says. With best wishes,

Best not put it off, as High blood pressure is one of the key clues! But I know what you mean about taking another problem to your doctor. She has decided that nothing surprises her anymore! Fatigue was what sent me to a sleep study. And of course I have restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movements, which are movement disorders. Good luck, Jeannee.

On the subject of taking another problem to the doctor, I had my blood test results today, I have been getting pains in joints/muscles ? ... and was worried it might be the dystonia spreading, but the blood tests have come back with rhemutoid inflamation, looks like I have rhumetoid arthritis but doctor has reqeusted another test to make sure ... I'm only in my 30's and on top of everything else feel like I may as well just go out and shoot myself ! .... was just trying to get to grips with the SD and asthma , and high blood pressure and now it looks like I have rhumetoid arthritis as well :( ...I keep telling myself things could be a million times worse, but on an emotional level there comes a point where you begin to question why is this happening ? .... ... On a rational level, I wonder if there are any links with the auto-immune system... PS : Shame we can't just trade ourselves in for a another model !
... Oh well ... Snowie,

My doctor insists I have an auto-immune disorder. Of course she doesn't know what it is! My addrenal glands are screwed up, my pituitary tests high in prolactin, I have nodules on my thyroid....ugh. I've had doctors offer to take me out back and shoot me like they do horses. All of this started when I was in my 30's and I am now 46. I watched Cocoon. I want some of that water they swam in. But you know those old people are actors and they have more energy than I do!! They tell me my joint & muscle pain is fibromylagia and chronic fatigue. I have osteoarthritis in my neck but nothing shows up elsewhere. They have treated me for asthma, but the pulmunologist says it is not asthma, so I am beginning to believe it is dystonia. I hate being this old when I am so young! I had a closed head injury that started all my health problems. Did you?Jeannee in TX

No, I haven't had any head injuries or major accidents, not quite sure what happened to me ! lol .... I know exactly what you mean about feeling old, I feel decrepid! .. My friends keep givng me examples of folks they know with similar health problems in their 60's and 70's and I keep saying ... but , I'm only in my 30's!! ... oh if only we could have some of that water those old folks swam in from Cocoon !! lol... Snowie xx PS: Maybe we should carry on this conversation by email ... thanks for making me smile !

I wonder if GERD could be a part of the problem. When you are lying down you are at risk of having the gastric contents of your stomach reflux through your esophagus into your throat and larynx - which could cause you to cough (and threaten your voice). Ask your MD if it could be a factor. You could start on your own by elevating your bed a couple of inches and taking Pepcid AC - but I would suggest going to your MD first.Gary Lea

Snowie,Early on I choked/coughed often at night and at meal time. Through my Neurologist's help, my meds keep my mouth dry and I choke/cough less often. Actually, I do not remember the last time this happened at night-a good thing. She explained my throat muscles, not working properly causing me to choke more on liquids or saliva than a hamburger - ie-substantial food. She also suggested a straw at mealtime would help the choking in public. This is so embarrassing to me! I keep a bottle of water at my bed. I am a mouth breather, broken nose. Some times, I wake up with such a dry mouth it hurts. The water helps. So many people picked up on your thread. This has been good opening for discussion. Thank you for the question.
