Volume control?

Does anyone have a problem with volume control of his or her voice? Sometimes very loud, sometimes very soft. I feel out of control and my family constantly reminds me to change the volume of my voice.

Frustrated,
Ellen

Because of the spasms the volume will vary. You have no control of the spasms. Tell your family that "This is the way I talk. DEAL WITH IT!"

Ida,
You wrote: "This is the way I talk. Deal with it!"

Thanks for the help, they are tired of "dealing with it."

I appreciate to understand it is both loud or soft. I never know what will come out.
Ellen

I have a terrible time with voice modulation. When my voice gets loud I have people think I am angry at them. I just try to tell them I have no control over pitch or volume. I don't think some of them believe me. Of course it usually occurs in a very stressful situation or on the telephone.
Keep explaining to people and they will get the hint!

Hi Ellen,
I feel your frustration..I have ABSD..Which do you have?
I become very breathy when I speak.. my family thought I had something wrong with my lungs at first.. WHICH I got checked out and they were fine.. My hubby has been MORE supportive of me and the rest of the family when I found out that this was an actual disorder! My voice dont get real loud.. unless I am yelling at my kids.. ha ha.. in which case I sound fine..when I try to talk in a normal tone.. my voice breaks.. I have a difficult time saying "H" words.. its not actually the H itself but the vowel following.. sometimes Hello dont even come out right when I answer the phone! Im sorry to hear that your family is tired of dealing with it.. if only they could be in your shoes for a day and realize how fortunate they are to be able to speak freely and not have to worry about how they will sound once they speak. Try to educate them and have them read all they can about SD. this is what I have done..Perhaps they will have a better understanding..!!! Remember one thing Ellen.. you are NOT alone.. you will find alot of good information on this Bulletin Board.. and it helps alot having supportive people .. its helped me ALOT.. not neccesarily with my voice.. just knowing others out there have this and I am not alone! Botox isnt going to work for me.. I went to speech therapy.. saw 2 differetn ENTS.. and right now I feel I am back to square one!! I have NO medical insurance.. my hubby is trying to get his boss to get health coverage..All I can do now is sit and do some excersises that my speech therapist has given me to do!! I wish you the best of luck..and hope your family becomes more familar with the effects of the voice with this disorder!! ~Angie~ absd from PA.. if you would like to email me.. Angie,

Thank you for your support. I think at this time my family is so used to me as "sick" they are ignoring any need or help in understanding..

20 something generation... They will grow up and understand.

As to my husband. He works 12 hours a day plus weekends this time of year and is on over load.. So... ok.. I have printed out this thread and have asked him to read the messages I received. Lately he has said I talk to him like i am mean.. so, maybe he will understand it really is not the message it is the voice.. I am trying so hard to now talk like I did to the children when they were little just to not rub him the wrong way.

Thanks for the support,
Ellen
