I am still awaiting diagnosis (my appt with the specialist is only 9 months away now!). I think I have SD-Ab. Has anyone tried Clonasepam? A friend withe SD-Ad recommended it to me to relax my throat.
Anxious for any relief -- I feel like I'm being strangled from inside my throat.
Thanks for any feedback!

Yes, I take it (generic for Klonopin) and I have read
that several others on these bb's do also. But I am
sure you would have to get a Dr's prescription for it.

I find that it slightly relaxes me - it is an anti-
anxiety drug, so helps relieve the stress. When my
Botox is working well, I really don't need much, except
at night to relax me for sleeping. But right now, I am
due for Botox in another week, so I need it 3 times
a day. I have AD/SD and CD and meige's.

I'm just not sure if a Dr. would prescribe it for you
without a definite diagnosis, but you could try!
Best wishes to you - I know the feeling!!

Clonazepam is in the Benzodiazepines classification of drugs and was used primarily for seizure disorders. Now it's used for both seizure disorders as well as for people with panic disorders. It's one of the mildest drugs used in the treatment of dystonia - other types of dystonia besides SD. Has less side effects than Artane or Baclofen for example.

It is a controlled substance drug and is habit forming so you can't just start taking it and then suddenly stop. I've been on Clonazepam for my 'other' dystonias since 2001, but it does nothing to help my SD.

For more information on this drug, or any other drug, see the Rx website: http://www.rxlist.com/

I think it helps to know exactly what you're taking and what possible side effects you might experience before you take 'any' drug.

Anne

I also take Klonopin; it is for anxiety & helps me sleep better. I only take it 2 times a day, but if I have in a stressful situation or am having anxieety I increase to 3 times a day.

I was just wondering if you really meant it will be 9 months
until you can see a specialist? That is terribly long to
wait if you are in distress. Has your regular doctor tried
to get a quicker appt. or you?

My family doctor got me in to a neurologist in 2 wks., even
though they are very busy. Then my neuro got a quick appt.
for me with an ENT (otolarynologist). Why don't you see
if some other doctor can pull some strings for you?

Yes, my appointment was booked in January and is for November 15th, 2005! That is the state of the Canadian medical system. FYI -- I saw an ENT specialist last July and was told that I would benefit from speech therapy -- my speech therapy just started in March (so that took 7 months)!

I tried it when my voice started going downhill a few years ago. It seemed to help for a couple of weeks but I continued to decline after that.

I can totally relate to that "strangling" feeling. It seems like I'm constantly trying to relax my throat (and its not co-operating). I was prescibed lorasepam for anxiety, and it helped that, and I got clonasepam a year or so ago to help my singing problems. I would take some before a show, and it relaxed me, but sometimes a little too much. It may be helpful to you, but as someone else mentioned be careful with it; a very close friend of mine got pretty messed up on it and can no longer take it because its so addictive. All the best, Thomas

I was just curious how much did you take that would be 'too much"? I've taken .5 mg and does not seem to have an effect.

I was successful in getting my family doctor to prescribe Clonasepam, and it has been a HUGE help in reducing that strangling feeling! I take 1/2 of a 0.5mg pill, twice a day. I have experienced none of the associated side effects. I've been on it since February 1 -- don't know how long it takes to be "hooked" on it, but I am feeling SOOO much better.
