Hi there,

My place of work (social services) have agreed to get me an amplified phone, to help in my day to day work, as I have to spend a lot of time talking to various people over the phone.

I have Ab Sd, and wondered whether any one could recommmend a specific model of phone that helps with Ab Sd or generally with SD.

I have been struggling in my job for quite some time, and have recently had a period of sick-leave, and am now back at work, but have cut my hours down to 3 days. Financially this is breaking the bank, but in every other way its a god-send. It gives me time to re-coup as I get so tired, but I need to find another days work a week to make up my money to pay the bills.
Haven't figured out how I'm going to do this yet, but am working on it!! ... Where there is a will there's a way ! ...

I look forward to any replies,
With best wishes,

Snowie,

I have an receiver (mouthpiece/ear piece) that has a volume control dial - allowing you to boost the volume of your voice or reduce it. Since my failed SLAD, I sound more like someone with AB/SD. I have found this device very helpful, especially for my older friends who are hard of hearing to begin with and really struggle to understand me (like my 87 year old father). The receiver is a very traditional style so you need a traditional phone to hang it up on. Here is my old post on this topic. If you search the archieves you will find more information, I'm sure. "I have begun the search for an telephone that will amplify my voice. I first called my local provider - Verizon. They put me in touch with a phone store in Sarasota, Fla. This store had lots of "hearing" amplified phones, but nothing for the voice. With a little more research I found a company called GRAYBAR. They have distributors around the country. The one I called was in Tampa, Fla. The local rep. with whom I spoke first sent me a handset (only) that has a volume control "wheel" built into the handset. Unfortunately, it was incompatible with my cord phone base unit. I have now ordered the regular desk phone and will hook up the handset when the desk unit arrives. I'll keep you posted. John "

You can go on the internet and find a number of vendors who sell headsets with amplified microphones. I use one at work and it's pretty useful. Don't have the specifics handy but if needed I can dig them up.

Because you have AB/SD - be wary of headsets that do not cancel out the wind noise. The Chattervox, for example, has a great mic that has a spongy noise canceling aspect to it. Some devices - mics - don't do that so you end up amplifying the "blowing" that goes with AB/SD. John

Dear John and Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to reply .... I will look into it.
I would prefer a normal phone as opposed to one wiht a headset as I don't really want to draw attention to myself, but then I guess that's some thing I need to get to grips with.

I don't know if any one else has a conflict with wanting to be able to do things like everyone else but knowing that we do need some help and do have limitations and therefore have to accept that there are times when we will have to be dfferent by the very nature of our condition. I struggle with this, and would be interested to know how other people feel and deal with it...

Thanks,
Snowie

Yes, I feel your pain. I frequently have to switch phones in the house to get to "my" phone so people can hear and understand me. Adjustments are essential if we wish to survive and thrive!! John
