Was your Dysphonia caused by medication ?

Hello,
This message is asking for a response from anyone that has developed a condition like mine from medication used to treat hepatitis c infection.
The medicaton is Rebetol/Intron A.
The doctors call my condition a Dysphonia because of the way it has affected my speech, and there is also pain when I talk.

Art,

Good luck in pursuing this. I have heard of many cases of "dystonia" (as opposed to "dysphonia," which is vocal-terminology) which are prompted by medication. I've never heard of a case of "dysphonia" due to medication but I sure hope, if there are any, that they respond to your post so we can all find out. Welcome to the BB and please share more about your case and what you are describing.

Just to stay clear: Spasmodic Dysphonia is also called "laryngeal dystonia." It is a neurological disorder which affects the vocal system, as other dystonias affect other parts of the body...neck, eyes, torso, limbs, etc.

"Dysphonia" *means* a condition related to malfunctioning of the vocal system per se, with varied origins. Many causes and many manifestations. Not necessarily Spasmodic Dysphonia or neurological in origin. Please keep us posted on what you get back re your request. We all need to learn.

Hi Art.

I'll second Lynne on the fact that there are many medications
implicated in various types of dystonia as a cause/contributor, etc.
I have spasmodic dysphonia (laryngeal dystonia, as Lynne described).
I'm not sure what caused it but I do know that I took compazine (an
anti nausea/vomiting drug which is on the list
of medications implicated in dystonia) shortly
before my symptoms started. My speech therapist actually
brought this to my attention and said she had heard of compazine
implicated in another case of SD. So I found that rather
interesting. Anyway, I'm not sure if this was the
only culprit in my case (other things going on at the time
could have contributed -- I was quite sick for some time) but
it's a possibility.

Here's a quote from an internet site on drugs & dystonia:
"Certain drugs
have been implicated as causing dystonic reactions or dystonia.
These agents are not routinely the cause of spasmodic dysphonia,
but can potentiate or aggravate a preexisting disorder."

Were you told you have spasmodic dysphonia or do you have a different
type of speech problem as a result of another form of dystonia? Sorry if that's confusing!

Good luck with everything,
Laurie
