Hello from Texas,

I have a questions. I was wondering why some people with Dysphonia experience a congested feeling in the throat, and are constantly clearing their throat? I have this it seems. I talked to another MTD patient, and she said she experiences the same thing, but after the Botox it goes away. Why is that? I feel like I'm constantly clearing my throat, and it gets so frustrating. Sometimes it gets so bad that I can't even talk. Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you everyone.

Hi Cindy,

I have noticed that I have been clearing my throat for years. If or when I'm talking, and my voice sticks, or, if, since I sound sick most of the time, I'll clear my throat, like I'm congested, even if I'm not. I have wondered if this makes it easier for me? Like if I'm playing a part, or role. It's funny that you bring this up, shortly after me thinking about it. :)

Take Care,

Cindy I have had SD for over 20 years and feel like I need to clear my throat constantly as well. I used to do it all the time until going to ST for almost a year. The main thing the ST tried to get through to her patients was that that causes trauma to the vocal cords. The trick she taught me was try to swallow instead and if this doesn't work try and take a few sips of water to clear the mucous. Always keep a something to drink next to you, so when you feel like clearing your throat you can try her recommendations instead. The last thing any of us needs is more damage to our vocal cords.
