Saw a post not too long ago with something to read out loud that distinguishes between the two problems. Now can't find it. Can someone post it again? It was similar to the rainbow passage.

Thanks,

Steve Weiss

Dear Steve,

I've copied the post by NSDA President, David Barton, which was put on our bulletin board on 5/5/05. I hope that this information is of help to you.

Sincerely,
Mary Bifaro

Yes, that is my understanding of Dr Marshall Smith's presentation.
The contrast between the group of AD/SD and MTD patients saying the pairs of sentences was very obvious.

***********************************************************
AD/SD:

The AD/SD patients he showed had much more trouble with the voiced sentence:

"Early one morning a man and a woman were ambling along on a one mile lane running near Rainy Avenue."

but were able to say

"He saw half a shape mystically cross fifty or sixty steps in front of his sister Kathy's house."

fairly easily.

********************************************************
MTD:

In contrast the MTD patients appeared to struggle with both sentences with equal difficulty.

*******************************************************

David Barton (AD/SD, Auckland, New Zealand)

Hi Mary,

When David posted this awhile ago I noticed that I can say both sentences easily. Since everyone's SD is different, I wonder if everyone can be different in this too? I was diagnosed with ADSD, and saw how my vocal cords closed. I'm not disbelieving that I have it, but I don't believe that those sentences can determine which you have.

This is my opinion,

Paula

I tried the sentences and found that my voice was choppy with the first sentence and smooth on the 2nd sentence or as close to smooth as it gets. Very interesting.

Thanks Mary!

To me this presentation was one of the highlights of the symposium, because it is so important to be able to distinguish SD from other vocal disorders.

I can speek all the words to those sentences perfeclty.

I was diagnosed AB SD.

So it seems like I was diagnosed correctly, right?

If someone does have MTD, what are the treatment options, just out of curiosity?

So, am I correct in assuming, that AD and MTD have similar symptoms? But that for ABSD they're are no similarities to AD MTD.

Thanks for extra info!

Sincerely,

Kim/houston AB SD

When I was (mis)diagnosed with MTD the suggested treatment, which didn't help me, was voice therapy.

Hi Steve;

I need to make a correction to my previous post.

I can speak the 1st sentence well. The second is very hard for me.

I think the reason I thought I could speak both sentences was because I was whispering. And I can whisper everything.

Did you get a correct diagnosis?

Thanks,

Kim AB/SD

I am able to say the first sentence easily, but the second sentence is my worst nightmare! The words "fifty" and "sixty" are almost impossible for me to say without botox. I have been diagnosed with AD-SD and botox works great for me, so I don't really think I have MTD. I just think everyone is different!
