Thyroid and SD Is there a relationship?

I was reading elsewhere about certain thyroid conditions incorrectly treated manifesting SD symptoms. As I took radioactive iodine for Graves disease and destroyed my thyroid, ruesulting in hypothyroidism for which I take armour thyroid, I wondered if anyone else is knowledgeable about this? The location of the thyroid gland and its proximity to the vocal cords as well as the thickening of those cords that can develop from hypo has always made me wonder. Anyone else ?

Celest, Hi

This definately applies to me. I had a thyroidectomy in February 2000, and my voice became much worse afterwards, but I had to have this done, as I had a 6 cm lump on the right side, and several smaller ones on the left.

But, I don't blame SD on this surgery, because I had mild symptoms years prior, it just became worse after the surgery and I do not know whether it may have become worse anyway.

All I know is that my co/workers noticed my voice was much worse after the surgery.

But, who knows, maybe that big lump was putting pressure on my vocal cords.

The Dr. who did my thyroidectomy (complete thyroidectomy) works very closely with the cardiologist who I work for. I'm in contact with their office on a daily basis, and I know they can hear how bad my voice is now.

In answer to you question, I've also wondered if my thyroid condition has to do with my devlopoing SD.

Thanks,

Kim

Yes, I too am now exploring the same possibility w/both my Neurologist and a Endocrinologist. My thyroid test came back normal which both M.D.'s said isn't unusual. There's a real debate going on in the medical field as to the accuracy of the thyroid tests. Check out the internet and you'll see what I mean. I've purchased a couple of books on low thyroid and never realized that one of the symptons could be related to the voice.
I'm now on Levoxyl 0.75 mg. and being monitored by both Dr.'s. My Endo. thinks there's a correlation. My Neuro. says he aware there could be a connection. He's very open/curious to the possibility. He sent me to the Endo.
I too, would love to hear from others who might be exploring the same possiblities. I've tried botox, Rx's etc. nothing worked. I'm open to anything except surgery at this point.
Good luck and thanks for bringing this up.
Sincerely,
Lu/AB

Hypoparathyroidism which causes calcium deposits in the basil ganglia and hence larengeal spasm is an option. I have read that the parathyroids can be damaged during thyroid surgery.
There is a blood test for this and a CT scan would show up calcium deposits. Hope this helps.

3 years ago when I first went to the doctor with a voice problem, the first thing he did was test my Thyroid. Thyroid problems can cause voice problems, but SD is totally seperate from what I understand. Amelia, Minnesota, AD-SD
