I am an ABSD and recently had a set of botox injections. This is the first time I have experinced really significant breathing difficulty. I also now sound like an ADSD. My questions is, do ADSD'ers have diffuculty drawing air through their vocal cords to vocalize all the time?

Hi Kutschera,

I have ABSD too, and I was wondering about your previous history? I have not tried the botox shot yet ever, and I am considering trying it next month. Has it improved your voice in the past? How many times have you been treated with succes in the past?

I have read on this BB that the breathing difuculty diminishes over a short period of time.

Hi:
Regarding breathing issues associated with botox injections for AB, I can say that, with my last injection, there was a definite shortness of breath. It lasted for close to a week. It was scary at first, and then I got used to it and it then simply went away. Keep in mind that, if the injections are unilateral there will not be near as much (or probably very little if any) of a problem.
My injections are bilateral, so the breathing issue is exacerbated as a result of both PCA muscles being affected at the same sitting.

I have been having botox infections for the past two years. In the past I have had minor breathing issues, nothing that lasted past a few days. This time, my voice sounds like someone with ADSD and to inhale is an effort. It is beginning to get a little easier as the week passes so my hope is that my voice will stay strong for a loner period of time. I have had significant improvement in the past. As a matter of fact every set of injections have reduced the painful muscle spasms and only once did it not help my voice. I really think it's worth it even with the problems I'm having now. I know the problem will only last a week or two.

I have AD, but I also have breathing problems when I
DON'T have Botox working, because of PVFM (Paradoxical
Vocal Fold Motion). This can happen to both ad'ers and
ab'ers. Please go back and read discussions on this
on the back pages. There is a good one that is now on
page 9, from October 13, a question from Keith, with the
subject "bilateral injections for AB". Particularly
note the comprehensive explanation by "Lynne".

Do you know how to access the back pages? Just click
where it says "page 1", then click on other pages.

So there are two reasons for breathing difficulties: one
is from the Botox itself (which I never experience as a
side effect) and the other is the condition which is
aided by Botox. That's why it is 'paradoxical'.

The more you learn, the more you see how weird this
disorder is, but at least this forum assures us that
we are not alone, so that is quite a bit of comfort.

Bes wishes, Marilee in Indiana, U.S. gcazz@juno.com

Hi Kutschera,

Very interesting that you have also felt that you feel like you are sounding like the opposite of what you have. The same thing happened to me, I have ADSD and felt that I sounded like ABSD during my breathy period. I figured it was because my vocal cords were forced open by getting a botox shot, and rather they continue to slam shut, I was experiencing AB symptoms. As the botox shot wore off, my voice became deeper in tone.

In answer to your question "Do ADSD'ers have difficulty drawing air through their vocal cords to vocalize all the time" my answer is no. From my experience when not having a botox injection that is working at the time, the problem is not drawing in air, it's in gasping for breath after talking. After my last botox shot that worked wore off, I noticed very much how my vocal cords slammed shut while talking. While the botox shot is working, I can honestly feel air going into my vocal cords while I'm talking. It's very refreshing. :) I hope that I answered your question.

Happy Holidays,

I started having problem breathing just about a year ago. I seemed to be getting worse. It would happen when the botox was starting to wear off. I have found out that there are several things that can cause the breathing problems. After botox the nerves to the vocal cords are paralized and that allows too much air to flow and makes you feel like you are not getting enough air. Actually I was fine after botox. It was went the injections were wearing off that I started having trouble breathing. I have found out that acid on the vocal cords can cause breathing problems and there are several web sites that talk about that. Also folds in the vocal cords or swelling in the vocal cords. I don't think the botox itself causes the breathing problems but the struggle when you are getting too much air makes you feel like you can't breath. It's very scary so I do understand how you feel. Watch the dairy products, citrus and tomatoes. They cause acid.

I was planning on having surgery and had to allow the botox to wear off completely before I could get the surgery done. The doctor wanted me to wait at least two months after it wore off and my breathing was getting really bad. I had never waited that long before a botox injection.

I had surgery for my SD on 11/29/05 and have had good success. My doctor said it was a text book surgery. Anyway, healing takes awhile. It's been two months and it takes about five or six months for a completely normal voice but it is improving daily. I had a voice right after the surgery but it was a little weak. It is getting stronger by the day but when I overuse it insead of resting like I need to, I find a little breathing problem sometimes. Well, not so much now that I am getting better but the surgery acts like botox and paralized the nerves to the vocal cords which caused too much air to go through. As the new nerves are totally working with the vocal cords the air flows normally. In the meantime I have learned to listen more and not always try to have something to say. I still talk but use a little more wisdom. Actually it is getting easier and easier to talk and I find less and less resistance.

Do you have trouble breathing right after the botox injection or as it wears off and its time for a new one? My doctor give me pills for anxiety but I rarely take them anymore. I had to take them constantly before the surgery. And I really don't like taking things like that. Anyway, there are different things that can cause the breathing and it gets worse when you get anxious. I pray that it gets better quickly.
Blessings
