Hello Beth. My name is KB. I've had ad/sd for four years. I tried botox(6 inj.), but it doesn't work for me. Doing a search on the Web, I stumbled on thyroplasty type 2, created by a doctor in Japan. I called the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. to see if they were familiar with this procedure. They've been doing this procedure for quite sometime. This procedure is for ad/sd only. If you do a search, you should be able to get the info you need. Hope this helps.

Take care, KB

After reading your comments, I wondered how many injections of BoTox you have had. Having one shot and poor results does not mean it won't work. Sometimes it takes several injections to arrive at the proper dosage for you. Also, you might try another doctor. Some are better than others in giving the injections.

AD/SD since 1987 = 34 injections of BoTox

After 10 years of successful Botox injections, I became immune to it. I had thyroplasty 2 years ago.

I believe Dr. Maragos at Mayo Clinic Rochester is the only doc in the U.S. doing this, but Dr. Bansberg at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale is starting to do this also.

There isn't much literature on this but in skilled hands it seems to work well for most patients.

Dr. Bansberg at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale did this surgery on 5 patients in December,2005. So far they're happy with the results. He and Dr. Maragos at Mayo Clinic Rochester are the only docs in the U.S. who are doing this. Dr. Bansberg likes the procedure because, unlike other surgeries for SD, the larynx and surrounding nerves are not damaged in any way. The surgery is for AD patients only.
