Hello Everyone, can someone please tell me if they experience pain when they are scoped by an ENT. I went to my Neuro last Friday and he is sending me to Dr. Brian Same in Buffalo , New york to be scoped again. I have already been scoped 3 times and it was very painfull. Is there anything I can do to help with the pain? I'd rather have Kidney Stones again. Seriously!

Mary Ann:
My experience has been that it depends on the ENT. I found my endoscopies to be painful and annoying when I went to a physician in Philadelphia. Now, however, I don't mind the scope at all with the doctor that I see in upstate New York. Perhaps it depends on what they spray first. Generally lidocaine is used, but, like anything else, there are good and better techniques for doing things. I used to not look forward to the exams in Philly, but now it doesn't bother me at all.
If you are describing it as "very painful", it makes me wonder if they are administering any sort of anesthetic spray at all? They did this once to me in Philly, and I recall that it was painful.
Hope this is helpful at least a little bit.

Sincerely,
Keith

I've been scoped at least three times by different doctors and never felt a thing due to the spraying of lidocaine or something similar.

If you ever need to be scoped again, inquire ahead of time if the doctor will use some type of anesthetic spray. If the answer is no, the doctor better have a darn good reason or you can go elsewhere.

I second the motion!!

I have been scoped by two different ENTs and both were
very painless. Consider changing, not only doctors,
but cities! How far are you from Cleveland?

I'm so sorry you had pain, Mary Ann. But other things
you have said about your doctors (on the dystonia board
as well) worried me.

Hoping for the best,
Marilee

I don't know if I would call it extremely painful, but I find it extremely, extremely uncomfortable. Almost like claustrophobia. I hate it enough that if a doctor wanted to scope me now I would probably refuse.

Hi Mary Ann,
I`m so sorry to hear you have experienced a painful videostrobe, did Dr. Holmlund do the strobe? I didn`t know he done that. When you go to Dr. Same`s office your experience should be better cuz he is the expert ENT, at doing the videostrobe. The only thing I can think of is the doctor did not wait too long for the spray that is used to work its magic.
I Have had the strobe 3 times without pain by Dr. Same and one time by Dr. Haben at the Unv. of Rochester in N.Y. where he does a different procedure at giving the Botox shot.
I wish you the best and will keep you in my prayers that all goes well for you. God Bless!!!

Hi Mary Ann,

I have been scoped approximately ten times total. I would call the experience uncomfortable and unpleasant but not really painful, except one time. This one was at NIH when I was participating in a study on familial voice disorders. They didn't use lydocaine because they didn't want to alter my vocal cord response in any way. Since the lydocaine numbs the area, they feel that it also can alter the movement of the larynx. They also put the scope through my right nostril instead of the left which had been done before. It burned, gagged me, and was generally quite painful and uncomfortable, although I don't think the pain was at the level of kidney stones. (I've never had kidney stones so I'm just guessing, but it wasn't nearly as painful as childbirth.) My mother, who was participating in the same study, had the same experience. It may also depend on the size tube being used to do the scope. There is a range of different sizes they use. When I had that one bad experience I really dreaded the next scope, but it wasn't nearly as painful. I would encourage you to tell Dr. Same about your bad experience, and be sure he looks in both nostrils to see which passage is more open. Hopefully this next time will not be so unpleasant.

Mary Ann,
I tried to reply a couple of days ago and could not, so here goes again.
I was scoped at UCLA without any anesthetic and there was nothing to it. From what you describe it sounds as if the docs on the east coast are using different type of equipment than their California counterparts. (Wondered by a former New Yorker transplanted west from Syracuse,NY)
Good luck. I hope all goes well for you.

Same here guy's, discomfort, but far from pain, my Dr. used that pain killing mist gas whatever it was just inhaled a bit and it felt like a light liquid going down my throat and total knumbness, Litocane sounds familiar, I took half a xanex to make sure I was relaxed during this 3'rd scope and first shot, it was painless, I agree, try a different Doctor.
