I'm a little freaked out....

My neck is not as tender to the touch this morning and I can move my head from side to side without pain. However, I keep having this weird gurgling sound in my throat and I really can't clear it. It is like I can't cough. My voice sounds strange but not in the way anyone has described. It is actually lower and when I speak I feel like I need to cough. I sound almost like ET. I am not having any trouble swallowing. The gurgling and not being able to really cough is bizarre. Anybody know what I am talking about? I don't recall reading anything about anyone gurgling.

Hi Kelly Jean,

I'm glad to hear that your neck is a little better now. I was interested to read what you were saying about the gurgling and not being able to really cough .... Are they absolutely sure it is AD SD ? ... What you're describing sounds similiar to what I expereince with AB SD, I have problems clearing my throat and not being able to really cough properly. People also comment that my voice is lower to start with but clearer, and then it gradually increases in volume as the botox settles down.

Also it seems that Ab'ers generally don't seem to have problems swallowing liquids, but more so with solid foods. I wonder whether you could have mixed AD/AB.

Also another thought re: your earlier posts re: the botox not working, is that there have been times when I also haven't had any effects from the botox injections. It took at least 4 shots of botox before I really experienced any benefit and my speech pathologist had warned me that this may happen. She also explained that I may have trouble trying to cough, but I can't remember exactly why this is.

I have read some of your earlier experiences with your doctor, and also your recent post about your traumatic experience with your last injection. All in all, I think perhaps it would be wise to consider seeing another doctor that specializes in SD.

But on a more positive note the fact that you are experiencing some changes: ie, gurgling and not being able to really cough, is likey to be a sign that the botox has had some effect, which is hopeful ...

I hope things improve soon,

With best wishes,
Snowie

Thanks for your reply Snowie! Well, things have been changing all day. I can now barely speak at all and I believe this is what people refer to as "breathy". I have NO VOLUME. I had assumed trouble swallowing meant that it was hard to swallow but I can swallow but it goes down funny and I end up sputtering and feeling like not all of it is going down. I don't know if that makes sense. I have never experienced this kind of trouble swallowing. I cannot cough and I have these moments when I am trying to talk where my body wants to cough and it really can't. This is just bizarre. I feel very out of control. It is embarrassing too. At least I am having some side effects this time so that I know something is happening. I am going to stick with my doctor through one more round. After that, I am going to look for another if it is not working out for me.

Kelly Jean,

When I read your post, I wondered if you have ADuctor or ABductor SD, since the symtoms you've described are similar to ones I've had from time to time -- and I'm an ABSD patient.

Snowie's reply to you pretty says what I would have said. But I'd like to add that if you do have ABSD, it's very important to go to a doctor who knows exactlly how to give the injections, because they're trickier (and more difficult) than those needed by ADSD patients.

I've gone to Dr. Blitzer in NY, (who "invented" Botox shots for ABSD patients). He's told me there are perhaps 8 other doctors in the US who he considers have had enough experience to give the shots correctly.

If you're not absolutely certain which version you've got, then start there. I agree with Snowie, though. The fact that you're experiencing new phenomena indicates that at least something is happening! And, as long as you can breathe easily, there's nothing to really worry about.

Good luck!

How do you know whether you have AD or AB? What are the symptoms?

I definitely know where you are coming from. I just had my first botox tx last wed and still trying to decide if it took. I did not have trouble drinking or eating, my throat / neck was very sore , but better now. My pitch is real high right now and I also have a feeling like something is stuck in my throat or like I have to cough - like I'm clogged down there with mucus (although I'm not having trouble w/ mucus). A few times when I speak, my voice sounds real good, crisp, clear - but that's only a couple times a day. I am not sure if my high pitch is part of the breathiness or not, but I don;t have much volumne.

It sounds like you're on your way, I'm still learning the signs of positive change as well, so reading your notes & replies to your comment has been helpful. Good luck

Susan, you do have some signs that it took. I'm going to post a longer message on your other post that is still on page 1, since some people miss these on the other pages, because they just read page 1.

I'm sure Kelly Jean appreciates your replies, because she has been through a lot with hers, lately, too, as you can tell!

Kelly, I get that same weird sound. It lasts for a few seconds. When it happens while I'm on the phone, all I do is hope the person does not hear it.

I also do a quick breath as if I had a good cry. Have you ever noticed after a child has finished crying, there is this quick, staccato breathing in, and then a sigh? Anyway, I don't know if I'm giving a clear picture, but it is what I experience.

Sometimes, my spasms trigger my gag reflex. That's the most troubling for me.

BonnieBelle,

I have been getting Botox injections for a year, and 3 out of 4 have worked properly so far. Yet, with all 4 of them I have had that quick breathing. Yes, it is similar to what a child does after crying. It's even similar to a big breath during a yawn. I feel that it is kind of refreshing. When I know my shot is working, it feels great! :)

I'm not sure if you or anyone will be able to read this, since I am about a month behind in my reading, and am now trying to catch up to it. Good luck with your experience.

Take Care too,
