Hello Rob,Yes, last summer I took a two day Alexander technique workshop. After a year of speech therapy, my otolaryngologist thought I sounded better and suggested acting lessons.
The workshop was taught by a dancer and attended by some actors and me. The emphasis of the approach is based on the idea that we unwittingly enforce our own bad habits when speaking and that by becoming aware of bad habits, like say, tightening our neck and jaw muscles when we talk we can make our voices better.
I think there is a lot of truth to the approach because the same summer I began, also on my physician's advice, to work with a voice coach who teaches opera. She instantly made some observations such as "look, you are not using your teeth as a resonator to say t and th, or f, you are blocking your voice with your tongue, and you need to use your lips to say B and P!"
I found that this approach suited me much better than speech therapy and was completely enjoyable. I have AB/SD or possibly AB functional dysphonia.
Best wishes,
Wendy
