Clearing your throat?

I recall reading on here once, that one should not clear your throat while talking. Why? I do it, either when my voice sticks, or a word has a hard time exiting my mouth. I can't help it. It's like I'm pretending that there isn't a problem, and trying to cover it up, or just get over it. Does anyone else know what I am talking about?

I also have read that one should not whisper. I actually have been told to whisper, because my voice is so loud, or strong. I would love to talk in a normal tone, but sometimes it's hard.

I'm still happy with my unilateral injection which I had on March 11th. Yet it's different than the bilateral ones. I have been able to breathe and talk easier since day one, with no severe breathiness, yet, it is not a perfect voice. I'm not sure if I still need more time for that to happen. I'm not complaining, just observing. :)

Any comments would be appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

I was a music major in college, and was taught that clearing your throad was a BIG no no for musicians. Apparently, when you clear your throat, it hits your vocal chords together (violently I might add) and so it's not a good thing. Sadly, I didn't really take the advice that I should have, and when I was diagnosed, my ENT reminded me that it was bad for me, and I was like "oh yeah..."
Here are a few alternatives if you need to clear your throat:

1. drink water (it does help)
2. cough drops
3. most importantly, try not to think about it, or the desire to clear your throat just gets worse.

I still forget and do it too, and it won't kill you to clear your throat every once in a while, but I hope that answers your question a little.

I was told to keep track of how often I cleared my throat after my initial visit with the speech pathologist. In one day, after the 39th time, I quit counting.

I remember the actor Fernando LLamas was on a talk show. The name escapes me, but I remember he said he was given an exercise to clear the throat. As he began to hum, you hear him raise and lower the tone with his lips together. I tried it a few times. It took too long to work.

It was explained to me that whispering requires more muscle work from the throat. Imagine my disappointment at my baseline session. I thought I was doing well. It sounded more pleasant compared to the way I sounded when I struggled to talk.

This is totally off topic. I am a singer, diagnosed several years ago with ADSD. I did a Google search and found a post of yours (I think it was yours -- the screen name was the same) on the musicians dystonia bulletin board. Was that yours? Are you also a singer with SD? Please email me off this board:
maryanna at twtp dot org.

I'd love to exchange stories. I'm not giving up hope of singing again.

Thanks!

Hi Maryanna,

Who are you talking about? Not to be rude, but I am unclear who you posted your previous post to? You said you found a post of yours, my question is whose? I'm just a bit confused.

Please fill in the blanks,

Thanks,

Paula

Hi, Paula! Please the pardon the interruption. I have had the same thing happen to me; anyway, MaryAnna saw my name under your post. I replied to her on this board, but it is still in line to be reviewed. I guess it takes a while to go through the replies before posting them.

I have sent her an email already. I apologize for the mixup.
