I just got another letter from my congressman Lane Evans. The letter he sent me said that the hearings for disability are now taking 22 months. I first filed on July 1, 2004 after loosing my voice in 2003. I started the request for appeal in February of 2005 and Social Security told me it would be a year. As I am self-supporting and only have a small pension it is very difficult to get by. I really want to work, but cannot find anything I can do for sufficient pay.

I had to give up my part-time bookkeeping job because I could not answer the two phone lines, or wait on customers. The job also had the duties of Office Manager, and Store Manager, and my boss had other businesses. I could not be left alone in the business, as our technicians were almost always out on calls. I also struggle with fatigue.

I tried a freelance writing job where I worked from home and sent my articles by e-mail Word attachments, for consideration to purchase at a small weekly newspaper. I was only paid $20 for each article they bought. I had to leave my computer on all day and take frequent breaks from the keyboard as my neck and shoulder muscles get too stiff. I also have arthritis in my fingers and a cyst on my right ring finger that gets larger the more I type.

I thought the freelance writing would be the perfect job for my medical conditions, however this paper liked my writing so much they started asking me to do much more writing. The pay barely covered my expenses and I became so exhausted from woring late, due to the need for frequent keyboard breaks, that I nearly collapsed twice with complete exhaustion. I am even having trouble cleaning my house and taking care of the yard, etc. I used to work full-time and yet I kept the house, car, and yard spotless. I don't know how I did it, as every chore is so exhausting now that I have to sit down often.

Has anyone else experienced this type of fatigue? Is it possible I could have "Chronic Fatigue" and how do they diagnose that condition?

Hi Kitty,
I have an ex-sister-in-law that was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue, but there wasn't anything they could do for her, so being diagnosed was of no use to her.

In reading your account, you may be depressed and that will make it very difficult for one to be motivated and will also express itself as lack of energy. Perhaps you should explore that possibility.

I wish you luck in getting disability. It is a long process. I worked in a medical office for 11 years and I knew of people who were blind and disability was calling the office to be sure that the people were still blind......I couldn't believe it. What a system we have.

Patricia

Hi Karen (Kitty)
Actually, I did have a lot of fatigue through my 30 years with SD but I did work, as a hairdresser, as a secretary, a bookkeeper, a school teacher 1st & 2nd grades, and as a cashier. I even did some computer work at home. I did mostly wedding anouncements, birthday invitations and resumes. I always felt tired. I always pushed myself and still do. I had a breathing problem. asthma and also some breathing problem from the throat area caused by SD but I didn't know I had

I had the SLAD-R surgery which corrected my voice beautifully. I'm especially happy with my voice after six months from surgery, but did have some breathing problem continuing, however they are getting better as time goes. I'm retired now so only do what I want to do. Of course I don't live high with social security but I manage. I'm not pushing surgery. It worked wonders for me but it does not work for everyone.

It's good that you are on the BB because there are many wonderful people who are willing to help you and encourage you along your journey. Believe me, it will be interesting even wtih the times of trials. There is crying time and laughing time and if you are open with people and tell them about your voice problem they are much more apt to treat you with respect. People shun what they don't understand.

Also I highly recommend going to the home page and ordering the new DVD "Understanding Spasmodic Dysphonia." It's very informative and very helpful in many ways. It gives you a better understanding.

Karen,
I reveived my Social Security 3 months ago after a three year battle. I wish you luck with your case.

I found that SD made me depressed. After trying to particiapte as a volunteer for our local election and being turned down, I was devestated. I enrolled in a community exercise program and the daily exercise routine helped me a lot. Sometimes when I'm depressed I feel very tired.Try routine daily exercise. It can't hurt.
