It seems to be taking more effort and I have less volume. Sometimes I have none at all. Sometimes I terminate coversations because I am to tired to try to speak. This has just started.Anyone else go through this?

I experience the same thing, but less in the chest area and more in the throat, like my vocal cords are stuck in my pipe. I know how frustrating this can be! You can try to alleviate this by taking in a deep breath before speaking. The choking may be due to not enough air, which in my experience aggrevates the spasms and causes them to become more frequent and worse.

Best of luck!

Hi,

I've had SD for 49 years at least. Yes, I was almost 11 when I first had the overwhelming symptoms, but it took me until I was 45 to discover I probably had SD and another year to get any doctor to take me seriously (this after many years of doctors telling me I had emotional/mental proglems!)
Yes, not only have I had tightening of the chest, but also of my jaw, neck, of course vocal chords & abdomin. In short, any part of the body you would use for pushing forth sound. Part of this came from incessant panic attacks and hyperventilating, which were not as dramatic as what most people think. There would be times when I'd wake up with broken pieces of teeth in my mouth. The harder I tried to produce sound, the worse it got. I used to carry a paper bag in my purse to breathe into for the hyperventilation, so I could redistribute the oxygen and carbon dioxide. Relaxation techniques are very important here, but I would caution anyone against hypnosis. Since botox didn't work for me, I suffered along, losing jobs and having a very difficult social life, until my neurologist, at his wits end, decided to try me on Baclofen (a muscle relaxer used for MS, Parkinsons patients and horrible spasms that para and quadraplegics get. Paxil helped with depression and panic attacks, but all have side effects. If anyone wants to discuss any of this further with me, I'm always available. The main thing is, realize that your most powerful advocate is GOD, who made your body. I went through some voice therapy that helped me with breathing, relaxing with a very talented carying therapist, and this, too, helped.

You know it sounds like asthma. I have had the tightening in the chest before but haven't had it for awhile. I was diagnoised a few years ago with asthma. The vocal cords are not in the chest so sounds like you might have asthma along with your SD. I'm not a doctor but just speaking as somone who has suffered with asthma a few years. In fact I was hospitilized with asthma several times. It's a different feeling than SD but a lot of times people with SD are diagnoised with asthma. The voice part is likely SD however but it could be both. Sometimes I go to the doctor thinking its asthma and my doctor checkes me out and says not the pressure you feel is in the throat area. Other times just the opposite.
Blessings to you, Barbara / god4me@comcast.net

I know what you are talking about. I get physically exhausted when I speak . Sometimes I get dizzy . It is such and effort to try to get volume. It is like it is Draining your whole body just to try to get a sentence out. Take care.

Mary Ann, Mixed Sd
