I don't know if benedryl has dextramethorphan or not but still interesting. Below is the description of a study that is to be conducted in the near future.

Study will examine how dextromethorphan, a drug that alters reflexes of the larynx (voice box), might change voice symptoms in people with voice disorders due to uncontrolled laryngeal muscle spasms. These include abductor spasmodic dysphonia (breathy voice breaks), adductor spasmodic dysphonia (vowel breaks), muscular tension dysphonia (tight strained voice), and vocal tremor (tremulous voice). Dextromethorphan-one of a group of drugs called NMDA antagonists-has been used for years in over-the-counter cough suppressant medicines. In animal studies, the drug has blocked one of the reflexes in the larynx that may be associated with spasms in the laryngeal muscles.

I was just curious. I heard about this study being conducted about a year ago, but it sounds like the study has not started yet. Is there any way to find out the status of this study?

Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (trade name Benadryl®, as produced by

I wanted to say my voice is 95% better. I just started it, so we will see if it continues whille I am on it or not.

I will let you know.

..and that just goes to show how desperate I'm getting. After reading that study about diphenhydramine, I bought a freakin' bottle of cough syrup containing it. I haven't used it yet but now after reading about the benadryl, I'll probably give that and the benadryl a try. botox, surgery, drugs, voice therapy, cough syrup... wonder what's next?

Chaanz, Thank you for making me laugh. I can relate to your desperation level. Humor is a great coping skill for this condition. A good laugh is good for the soul and it clears our voices up temporarily. Thanks!

Don't forget to say a few nursery rhymes as well.

I just wish it could be that easy!

I'm glad you got a giggle, Concetta. Humor is always the best weapon and like my dad always said "Sometimes you gotta laugh to keep from cryin." My dad was always right.

There definitely is a government study to test Dextromethorphan to control vocal spasms.

I did some Internet searching and found an article from the NINDS division of the National Institute of Health (NIH) dated November 18, 2006. The article describes the study and indicates they are still trying to recruit patients. The study started in March 2003.

Why not volunteer and move the study along faster (I would but am not eligible due to other health issues)

note: Do a Google search for Dextromethorphan NINDS and you'll find information about the study.

Interesting perhaps useful side note. I had a doctor's appointment this morning. He insisted on giving me a flu shot, I've never had one. At any rate, he told me that another patient of his with SD and that the flu shots, in some manner, help his SD spasms. Maybe I'll find out soon?

I got a flu shot a few weeks ago. It did not have any effect on my SD spasms. In my opinion the doctor is probably saying that a flu shot help SD spasms to get you to get a flu shot. I am never surprised at what some people say helps sd.

Doesn't the Benedryl make you sleepy? I'm tempted to try it just to see if I notice a difference, but I'm afraid I wouldn't make it through the day without a nap.
