Voice tremor

Hi, my last post here I was feeling a bit confused about my recent diagnosis of SD and wondering exactly what was wrong with me. I saw a voice therapist last week and she has given me more of an idea of what is going on. She is sure I have dystonia but not SD. I have mild symptoms of several focal dystonias, generalised on my left side, myoclonus dystonia which causes electric shock type jerks to my head and a stong tremor in my voice. It is the strong voice tremor that made the neurologist think I have AD SD. After mentally preparing myself to have botox and letting myself think that after 33 years of sounding awful I had a chance of finally sounding "normal" again its a bit of a let down. The voice therapist said that botox is beginning to be used for tremor as well as spasms but its not as reliable and could make things worse. Has anyone else had botox for voice tremor alone and did it work???!

Hi, Lyn,

I'd go ahead and give the Botox a try for your vocal tremors. It could certainly help. I've never heard of it making vocal tremors worse. I would tend to trust MDs over voice therapists on this type of advice. Good thing about Botox is it always wears off. If you don't like the results, they're temporary. But I honestly can't see how it'd make a tremor worse.

Hi Laurie, because of the tremors I tend to speak softly so they're not so noticeable. Both the ENT and voice therapist said the botox could make me more breathy, lose even more volume and not make any difference to the tremors.

I have AB/AD SD and tremors. I've had Botox for the SD and am taking Inderal for the tremors. The Inderal helps considerably with the tremors but there's been no discussion by the Neurologist or Otolaryngologist of using the Botox for tremors. What I've learned is that what works for one person does not necessarily work for another, but we must keep searching and never give up! Good luck!

What is Inderal?? Do you know if it is similar to sinemet? I think sinemet is a dopamine responsive drug. The neurologist gave me sinemet to try but it made me very nauseous and didn't seem to make any change. He said it was a real long shot and he didn't expect it to make any difference, so I stopped using it.
