Was diagnosed a few months ago with SD and have been working with a speech pathologist. Have learned that if I use a higher pitch and much softer voice that my voice does not break near as much. However it is so soft that a great number of people can't hear me, including my husband who is hard of hearing! Has anyone any experience with using a personal voice amplifier and which ones would you reccommend? I'm a nurse and need to be able to communicate so my patients can hear me.Thanks.

Hi Bren,
I was given a voice amp. to use by my voice therapist a few years ago when they were "trying" different things for me. It worked well, and was noticeable that my voice was back to normal while using the device. However I was told that I would have to use it for many months to "try" to correct the SD. I work outdoors and just wasn't a practical solution for me, and wasn't sure if I had the patients for it. I'm trying the Botox injections. It sounds like you might be a good candidate for it though. Keep us posted!

omg this is too wild... I was just discussing this with my nephew tonight. I was at a meeting and was whispering to him.... my voice sounds so good at a whisper. I told him.. "wouldn't it be great if I had some device that I could just hold up and it could amplify my voice because it sounds so good in a whisper?" lol whenever I got home, I log on..... and viola!! Here is your post!! God works in ways, huh? It is something that I am going to check into also.... I will keep you posted

Cheers
johanna

I've not used one but several people have mentioned successfully using an amplifyer named ChatterVox. It requires wearing a small fannypack but no one mentioned that being a detriment. On this board, go to the Archives Section, type in ChatterVox to read past comments. You might also search Voice Amplifyers.

While working, I did have a voice amplifyer on my telephone and it worked great -something you might think about for home. Many states have programs allowing you to get the use of a home amplifyer for free (comes under the catagory of voice and hearing impaired).
