I find that when I'm talking on the phone, if I start purposely yawning, it helps with the strain. Anybody have any idea why this seems to help? Also, besides Botox, are there any other things that you find helpful in trying to talk. What about taking Ibuprofen or trying to do voice exercises? I keep hoping that one day I will wake up and this thing will be gone. I just can't seem to accept that I'm going to be like this for the rest of my life.

Yawning was one of my best "tricks" to get my speech going. I did it so much people started noticing and asking why I was always so tired. It must have something to do with stretching the vocal chord muscle?
I tried everything under the sun to correct it before trying Botox. Now after having the Botox it has truly put my voice back to normal. Hope this will last for a while, but I know it is only temporary. At least I know it works, and the injections are easy.
It's a nice dream to have to wake up and find our SD will be gone, but I think that it's in the same category as finding the fountain of youth!
Just accept the fact that we could have something far worse to deal with.
Stay possitive.
Raymond

Yawning worked for me but it was only temporary . My ENT & SLP were never able to positively diagnose with the specific disorder I had , but what broke my pattern of strangled speech was to repeat the months of the year repetitivley (every 3 hours ) in front of the mirror in a jogging motion . I found this relaxed all muscles in my neck ( forced my breathing ) and I was able to see my mouth pronounce the words and concentrate on the difficult sections and practice them until they became routine . Clonazepam was prescribed to help my anxieties which occured with my frustrations in improving my speeech . Hope this helps .......Sparrow

I think it might have something to do with the soft pallette being in a raised position when you yawn. I've been doing some exercises to strengthen my soft pallette the past year and have found them to be helpful.

What exercises do you do to strengthen the soft pallette?

I do something called the “Cat Yawn” where you mimic the exaggerated yawn that cats do. The idea is to get your soft palette to rise up as you open and close your mouth. I do ten sets of ten repetitions three or four times a day. It only takes a couple of minutes to complete.

Another exercise I do is to sing the word “who” up and down a musical scale. I exaggerate the “O” shape that your mouth normally makes when you say the word. Again, the idea is to feel your soft palette rise up as you do the exercise.

Thank you all for your feedback. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this.

Is there anyway you could pass on the instructions of these exercises so we could try it? Is this a doctors method, or something you have discovered?

I posted a couple of the exercises in the post above. I learned the cat yawn exercise from a chiropractor I saw last year and a friend of mine with SD told me about the singing exercise.
