Hi everyone. I have had AB/SD since 1997. I was diagnosed in 1999. Not a fun time trying to figure out what was wrong with my voice. I have had 3 botox shots. The first one helped. The next 2 did not help. I live in Northern Arkansas and went to Little Rock to get my shots. I was told that Bastian Voice Institute in Illinois is very good with AB patients. That is about a 10 hour drive for me. I was just wandering if anyone knows of a good Dr. a little closer to where I live. If not, has anyone been to the Bastian Voice Institute and had good luck?
I have enjoyed reading all the posts. It not only helps with giving me knowledge of SD but also gives me encouragement.
Thank you!
Karen

Hello Karen

Welcome to the NSDA BB!

At a recent NSDA Symposium Dr Bastian spoke about a technique he has developed to deliver the Botox more accurately to the muscles involved in AB/SD. They are harder to reach than the ones involved in AD/SD because they are at the back of the larynx area.

Dr Bastian is one of the most eminent SD experts worldwide and is a member of the NSDA's Medical Advisory Board.

Good luck.

David Barton (AD/SD, North Shore, NZ)

Hi Karen! I have AD/SD and for about 14 mos. I've been seeing Dr. Bastian for Botox injections. I was diagnosed about 9 years ago but was afraid to "do" the Botox thing. Not any more! Just had my 5th injections a month ago and am speaking just fine. I find Dr. Bastian to be extremely competent and also a kind and personable man. He is very highly regarded by everyone. I wish I could tell you about someone closer to your home but being a lifelong Illinoisan I can't - but I can certainly recommend Dr. Bastian! Good luck!
Dolores

Karen, welcome to the bulletin board. You will find that between the BB and the NSDA information provided through publications and symposiums that you will become much better informed. First, you and I share the same diagnosis, ABSD. You will find that in the SD community that this is the rare disorder. Second, you will find that as a result there are not many doctors that have experience with the abductor type.
Third, if you go to the NSDA website, www.dysphonia.org that you will see a healthcare referral tab. That will show you physicians in Arkansas and Oklahoma that have some experience. I would say, however, that Dr. Bastian, although a long way from your home, is an excellent choice. He is very knowledgeable. There may very well be some good doctors in Texas but that is a long drive for you as well.

Good luck to you and feel free to contact me at jrc2219@msn.com if I can be of any assistance.

John Comer ABSD Minnesota

Hi Karen:
I also have AB. Not too many people mention Dr. Bastian on the board. I can tell you this - I recently recommended that someone with AB go to see him (she lives in Utah) who had tried several different physicians with unsuccessful results. She flew to Dr. Bastian and was amazed at the results. I would say it would be worth it. He is considered to be among the best in the world.
My doctor, up in Rochester, NY, studied under Robert Bastian for many years and uses the exact same injection procedure for AB (botox administered directly through the larynx in the front, rather than on the side of the neck). He, also, achieves excellent and consistent results. Obviously, Rochester would be farther for you yet, but my recommendation would be to fly up there and give it a try. I fly up to Rochester for my shots, and have been averaging around 4 times per year. Best of luck. Let me know if you need anymore info. The lady I recommended to see Dr. Bastian had no trouble at all scheduling an appointment.

Regards,
Keith
