Does Botox not work for everyone?

I hear so many good comments about Botox and how well it works but was wondering if there are some people it doesn't work for. I recently had my first injection and it has made my voice different but not necessarily better. I have the DVD from NSDA and I believe Jimmie Rodgers doesn't use Botox. I also recently read that the creator of the Dilbert comic strip has SD and he uses a speech therapy but the article made no mention of Botox. Just curious if there are people it doesn't work for.

I have heard/read that there are people for whom it does not work. My understanding is that this is a rare immunity.
What is more common is the degree to which it is effective. Each person responds differently to Botox itself and many people are injected using the technique where the doctor does not visualize the vocal cords as he injects. What I find frustrating is that the outcome of each shot can be different given how good a "hit" they get in the right area. Pardon the bad analogy, but I liken it to trying to shoot at something in a dark room. You know it's confined to the room, but you don't know exactly where in the room it is.
I'm still early in my Botox treatment, but each shot has been different for me. One didn't work because it missed the cords (it went somewhere though because I had a hard time swallowing solids), one worked great, and one yielded a decent result.
I have considered going to a doc who uses the technique where he does visualize the cords as he injects. It's a more involved procedure, but accuracy rates are higher.
In any case, even if a shot has a mediocre result for me, it's better than not having it!

Thanks for the info.. I guess it's difficult because so little is known about SD and also because it seems to be different for everyone.

There is some good information on Botox on our NSDA website at: www.dysphonia.org. Go to the "treatment" section and click on "Botulinum Toxin" and "FAQ". In addition, go to the section called "Publications & Videos". We have a brochure available which is called "Your Botox Injection: What to Expect for Adductor and Abductor SD Patients".

People with adductor SD tend to respond better to Botox injections than those with abductor SD. One reason might be that the muscles affected in abductor SD are located behind the larynx.

Search the "archives" section of this bulletin board and you will find alot of useful information on this topic there.

Good luck to you.

Thank you for the info.. I guess the difficult part about this is that it affects everyone differently. I have adductor SD and it's been 2 weeks since my first Botox injection. My voice seems different now but not necessarily better.

I had 10 years of successful Botox injections from 1990 to 1999 before becoming immune to it. I suppose someone could have a natural immunity to it.
e-mail me for more info.
