Have had ABD SD for many years, characterized by voice breaks, "chopyness", and low voice volume. Tried Dextromethorphan,(generic over the counter variety) for 10 days, tablespoon each morning. The breaks & "voice chopyness", seems to be markedly diminished, however the voice volume is still quite poor, unable to speak loudly. Anyone have similar experience. Sugenesis@Webtv.net

Hi Bob,

Glad to hear you've found something that helps you. There has been a lot of previous discussion about Dextromethorphan, which is the active ingredient in many cough syrups, including Delsym. Most people who have reported improvement with Dextromethorphan have said that it takes a few days of use to get the full effect, if any.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducted a study comparing different types of drugs, including Dextromethorphan, and their affects on SD symptoms. I don’t know if the results are available.

You might want to check the archives for more information. When searching for information using the "Find" feature, be sure to check the box for "Search in message body." If this is not checked, then only the discussion thread headline and author are used in the search.

Good luck!

Hello,

I actually participated in the NIH study for the Dextromethorphan in September of 2003. I don't know the results of the study. There was one drug that significantly stopped the spasms, but with bad side effects. I had to be wheeled to the testing room, because I was so dizzy from the mediciation. When my spasms start getting bad, I start taking Robitussin cough gels. It helps some, it doesn't make the spasms completely disappear.

I found that Delsym worked good for me. I had to take it for about three days in a row before I saw improvement. The drawback was that you have to take it everyday and for me it wore off at night.
I found botox to be better......but I dont like the side effects of the breathy voice, low voice.
If I had to pick overall choice it would be botox. IT last longer. I dont like taking cough meds everyday......makes u tired too,

I take Delsym every morn and it does not make me tired. It does
wear after by evening time. I take it when the Botex shots
start to wear off. Then it give me a little extra time in between
shots. But it does work..
