laryngitis or spasmodic dysphonia ?

Monday I became hoarse while teaching a class, I had had a sore throat over the weekend. Monday evening my husband took me to the ER because I was having trouble breathing. I thought I had the "croup" which is what the ER said last year when this happened. Steroids and breathing treatments did not help. The E.N.T. that I saw I Tuesday said that he believes it is SD because of how my voice breaks. He said if I'm still hoarse on Tuesday, to call for him to schedule a Video Scoposcopy. Researching laryngitis and SD, how do you know the difference, they sound the same? Is there any thing that sets them apart that would help me determine if I have SD? I read that SD sufferers can sing, there's no sound coming out when I try, however I can whisper softly. I have 2 and 4 year old sons and I am in the teaching profession, I need to know now if this is forever! This is the 3rd occurrence in 3 yrs. Any thoughts?

My thought is,

Don't worry about it if it goes away. Since you have only had 3 occurences in 3 years, it obviously goes away. SD is a condition that stays with you all year round. There is no cure, but there are treatments. Some choose Botox injections, others try voice therapy, or even changing their voice, or going up a pitch. Hopefully one day there will be a cure for SD.

Take Care,

Paula

I agree with your thoughts, but I just can't shake the E.N.T. who seemed so confident that I have SD. He prefaced his comments with "have you been under a lot of stress?" My husband was all over that, like it's my own fault for not "relaxing." Thanks for you input!
