Hello. I found this site today and discovered a whole new world. I was diagnosed with AD/SD in 2003, but didn't get my first botox injection until August of 2004 due to pregnancy. I travel to Minneapolis (an 8+ hour drive each way) every three to four months, although I have been putting this last one off and am on month 10 (Way Cool). I get .5 units in each cord every trip and have breathiness for about 3 to 4 weeks, but put up with it because of the long trip (I'm told that the longer you are breathy, the longer the "good" voice lasts and it seems to ring true for me).

Recently I have been told of a doctor closer to home who gives the shots and have started researching him. I know to be cautious about who I see. I have had such good luck in Minneapolis with Dr. Godding, but would love to be able to drive the much shorter distance (only 1.5 hours away) and maybe even get lower unit injections for less breathiness (I speak a lot at my job).

Is there anyone here who is from the Midwest (North Dakota) who gets their shots locally (or at least closer to home)?

Dear Lorrie,

Good luck to you. If you haven't already, please visit NSDA's website at www.dysphonia.org. You'll find there a listing of healthcare professionals who treat SD patients. They have asked to be listed on our website. You can also look up under "support" a listing of the volunteers who are willing to talk to local SD patients. Our various SD support groups are also shown geographically.

Sincerely,

Hi Lorrie,

I'm from Minnesota, and used to see Dr. Goding myself. Ya know,
he's really a nice guy and I don't think he'd be offended at all if you explained your problem with having to travel so far to get shots. You could ask him if he knows someone in ND that he could recommend. Maybe he even knows of the doc closer to your home that you've been told about.

If you end up deciding to continue to see Dr. Goding, I'm sure he would also be open to discussing your desire to try lower-dose shots to avoid the breathy stage. He's a pretty easy-going guy.

Good luck with everything.

Mary
Mixed SD

Thank you to both Marys. I have visited the site and there are not doctors listed in North or South Dakota. There was one in Billings (only 4.5 hours away) and I did check into that one, however he doesn't do the injections for SD. I ask Dr. Goding every time I visit him, but he hasn't heard of anyone here either. You're right, he's wonderful. I like him very much. If I were closer, I wouldn't even think about going to anyone else.

I have recently heard of Dr. Marcus Fiechtner in Bismarck, and did a little checking with U of M. Dr. Goding hasn't heard of him so I am going to interview him well before I would get an injection. Dr. Goding is very understanding and will help all he can so I am thankful for that. I have to get a referral from my doctor here first, and found out today that he (my ENT) has moved, so I am working on that part of it with my family doctor. Oh the joys...

I see Dr Goding for my shots also. I agree with Mary that he would not at all be offended if you explained your situation. I am sure he would recommend someone closer if he knows of anyone. You could even call and leave a message for him to call you back. He is actually pretty good about returning calls! Amelia, AD-SD

Would Omaha be any closer? Dr. Chait at the Boys Town National Research Hospital is very good.

Hi Lorrie...I'm from ND, too. I haven't officially been diagnosed with SD, but I have been referred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Is this where you were diagnosed? If so, what can I expect? I initially had a paralyzed vocal cord after having surgery, but today my ENT found my vocal cord is now moving, but there was a lot of tension/spasms in the larnyx muscles. I haven't had much of a voice since surgery...very forced, hoarse, raspy, etc. Thanks.
