I'd like to hear from other AB/SD people. I'm interested in getting treatment after giving up for 20+ years. I used to get BOTOX injections in NYC from Dr. Blitzer. I live in the Albany, NY area and wonder if anyone knows of a doctor closer to my home who is familiar with treating AB/SD and doing BOTOX injections. Of course if any other treatment has been successful I'd be interested in hearing about that as well

I would recommend trying the Botox again. There have been a lot of improvements over the past few years.

For a list of the doctors and speech therapists who are very experienced in treating SD, go to the NSDA website at www.dysphonia.org (there's also a link at the top of this bulletin board), then click on the Healthcare Referrals link on the top menu.

Another thing that helps me is deep tissue massage with a massage therapist and circumlaryngeal massage, which is included in my speech therapy sessions.

Good luck!

I did go to the website and checked the physicians listed. Because AB/SD is even rarer than AD/SD I'm not sure how to identify a physician in my area who actually has had experience in AB injections and is interested in putting in the time and effort to develop a plan to help me. I used to go to Dr. Blitzer in NYC and he's wonderful and probably the very best person to go to but he's not one of the physicians covered by my plan. I'd have to pay the charges upfront, pay the deductible, and then be reimbursed 80% of the charges -- that's if they find the charge to be fair and reasonable. And if they decide that I could get the same treatment in my area at a lower rate -- I would be reimbursed 80% of the lower rate. I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to convince them that I can't get the same treatment for AB/SD in my area but I'm thinking they only care about their bottom line. I stopped getting treatment because I found it easier to live with the problem then get my hopes up. Probably TMI for you. Sorry and thanks for the reply!!

Hi,

Well...since you're in NY state....I'd recommend Dr. Haben up in Rochester. That's who I go to. He's excellent with treating AB and achieves great results with botox injections. If you want more info, please emal me at keisym@hasdhawks.org

Best,
Keith

I have AB and used to go to Dr Blitzer, but he no longer accepts my insurance anymore. Then I went to Dr. Lucien Sulica in Manhattan who trained with Dr. Blitzer. I liked him a lot and he was caring and concerned and took time to get the shots and amounts just right. I have since found a doctor in New Jersey where I live.
Botox just makes me less breathy and more fluid, I do not get any amazing results and I have been getting shots for 3 years now.

I know what you mean. I had the same results. I was scoped for the first time in over 20 years today and the doctor said I now look more like an AD patient as far as he can see. But the thing is I still talk like an AB patient. I made an appt with Dr. Blitzer for 2/18. I'll have to pay for it out of pocket -- who can afford that -- but I want to get his opinion before I let anybody new inject me. it's always hard to know what to do especially when you have few options and insurance isn't cooperative.
