Pneumonia??

Question - Is pneumonia much worse for those of us with SD? I haven't seen my doc yet, but I'm pretty sure that's what I have. I've had it many times since childhood. I live in a place where I get an allergic response to mountain cedar pollen, and this hit me the day after the pollen count hit a season high. Instead of the usual bronchitis, I think that it has gone directly to pneumonia.
My vocal chords are spasming over and over with every cough, and it feels unusually tight. My voice is gone, and I don't remember feeling this bad with pneumonia ever before. Any words of wisdom out there that I can relay to my doc when I call tomorrow?

The most important thing is to get whatever respiratory illness you do have diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. You probably shouldn't even have waited over the weekend. Places like PrimaCare can handle this and their co-payments usually aren't that much more than a doctor's office visit.

Coughing is very bad for the vocal chords, so getting that under control with medication and proper breathing techniques should also be a priority. If you have a speech therapist, they can help you with breathing tips that can help you cough less.

My SD diagnosis five years ago followed a bout with pneumonia with lots of coughing. I'm allergic to codeine, so the cough medication available to me was very limited.

Depending on if you have AD or AB (it sure would be nice if people would post this), you could actually have a little bit of improved voice as you start to feel better. I've found that when my vocal chords are inflamed, my voice sounds a little better because it's easier for the chords to come together.

I was sick over the holidays with bronchitis, but I think it may have progressed to pneumonia too. I had to go through two different rounds of antibiotics, nebulizer breathing treatments, and steroid inhalers before I got better.

Good luck and I hope you feel much better soon. Keep us posted.

H Lori,
I saw my doc today, and yes, I do have bronchitis (almost pneumonia), probably caused by that awful mountain cedar pollen irritating my bronchial tubes and lungs and then causing an infection. I live down the road from you, in San Antonio. I hate the cedar season that we get down here, followed by the live oak season, followed by the spring blooms. My asthmatic daughter moved to Ft. Worth for the sake of her health and her son's health. I can't wait to move in 2 yrs.
Like you, I'm now doing the antibiotics, breathing treatments and inhalers. Also like you, I'm allergic to codeine, so I have those little magic cough "pearls". They work fairly well for me.
I totally avoid those urgent care places, since I and my kids have been misdiagnosed there so often, and I have a PCP who is worth waiting for.
I'm sure hoping that my voice is better by tomorrow, or my poor students will have to do quiet seat-work all day.
Thanks for the info!
Marla

Hi Marla,

What are the little magic cough pearls? Sounds intriguing. Also, so you have AD or AB?

I'm really glad you got to your doctor and received the medicine you need. I'm also allergic to cedar, along with a lot of other things. As far as air quality and allergies, I think of all Texas is bad. I don't know if the DFW Metroplex is really any better than San Antonio.

I guess all the urgent care places are different, but I love the PrimaCare near me. I've only been there a few times, always on the weekend when I couldn't get in to see my regular PCP, but I've always gotten the same doctor and he was terrific. Plus, if they're busy, they let you call ahead to reserve your place in line or check in and then leave and then they'll call you when it's almost your turn. I love that! I wait a lot less time than in my regular doctor's office.

Anyway, take care and I hope you feel much better really soon.

Lori
